The Galaxy Z Flip 8 might finally slim down as Samsung chases foldable sales

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 might be the foldable we’ve always wanted from Samsung, but the Galaxy Z Flip 7 received a much smaller reworking this year. Despite the thinner chassis overall, Samsung’s flip phone still feels pretty bulky, even compared to the thicker Moto Razr lineup. After a quiet couple of years for the Flip series, though, that obsession with slimness could finally make its way to the Galaxy Z Flip lineup next year.

In an effort to boost its foldable sales, Samsung plans on launching a Galaxy Z Flip 8 that is both slimmer and lighter than its predecessors, as reported by @jukanlosreve). While the company managed to build a Galaxy Z Fold unit that was significantly thinner than its direct predecessor, the Z Flip 7 that shipped alongside it only reduced its bulk by 8.1% when folded — not exactly a revolutionary design. That’s set to change next year, as Samsung aims to reduce the Flip 8’s size and weight by “more than 10%.”

I’m no mathematician, but a 10% drop to both figures would result in a drastically improved design, with this hypothetical Flip 8 measuring in around 12.33mm (5.85mm when open) and 169 grams. Those measurements are nearly identical to the Galaxy S25 Edge, which measures in at 5.8mm and 163 grams. Obviously the two devices feature designs with radically different requirements — one has two displays, one of which bends in half, and the other one is thin — but still, we’re looking at a similar ballpark here.

This news echoes recent reports that Samsung is chasing big growth in 2026, on the backs of its traditional Galaxy S-series and its foldable Galaxy Z-series. According to The Bell, Samsung hopes to move 6.7 million folding phones. It’s an impressive number if Samsung can hit it, but a far cry from its expected Galaxy S26 sales numbers.

Of course, a slimmer design isn’t all Samsung would need to do to catch up to the flip phone competition. Despite the larger external window on the Flip 7, One UI’s outer display experience is a far cry from what you’ll experience with competitors like Motorola. With any luck, One UI 9 — rumored to launch with the Galaxy Z-series next summer — could make that external panel feel a little more like the small phone it’s destined to emulate.
