Tested: Predator Orion 3000 i7 32GB 2070 gaming rig will make you forget PC part-pickers

I’m usually a Mac user and have been for decades. But my son wanted to build a PC so he could compete with his online friends in high power games during the Pandemic. For just over $1,000 and a ton of time, he built a mean PC.

I’m now jealous and want to play Flight Simulator 2020 and some other games but don’t have the time to meticulously pick through the perfect build parts. Thankfully the whole package, including the gaudy RGB Frostblade fans configurable with PredatorSense App that make him jealous, are available in just Costco.

First world problem, I know, but I often find myself running out of room on my iMac’s 27-inch 5K display. I like to have things like Twitter, messages, Discord, music, or Slack kind of running off to the side while I’m hammering away on articles or paperwork. Also, I wanted something to play games on when work time was over.

Enter the $299.99, it ticks off all of the boxes and I’m now using that 5K iMac display as the side monitor. Head below for my hands-on review.

If I have one major gripe about Apple’s MacBook lineup, it is that their webcams are way too “potato” for $1,000 machines. I get it, there isn’t much depth in their razor-thin displays to fit a good camera module, but with a lot more Zoom/Skype/Hangout/Meet/etc calls during the past months, I wanted to see if a low-cost $30 Wansview 1080p upgrade would improve the situation.

In short, it did…

Seth Weintraub, Publisher of the 9to5 Network.

Running the vast 9to5 media empire from home certainly can have its advantages but if I spend my whole day in my office, I go a little insane. That’s why I break up my day with some time at the local coffee shop. I usually drop in after driving my kid to school or a little electric bike ride and spend about 2 hours (usually 7:30-9:30am-ish) knocking out emails, Slack, Twitter, light image and video editing and starting some writing. Head below for a look at my mobile setup…

Quick Review: AirPods alternative that charge via USB-C and actually stay in for $28 Prime shipped

$12 off/$28AC

Although they cost $159 and can fall out of your ears like mine. (You can pop some Earbuddyz on them but then you have to remove to charge creating more of a hassle, lost pieces).

I’ve gone back to just using my Bose QC35s for workouts and everyday music listening but now that summer is coming, I’ve been looking for an AirPods alternative to keep cool while mowing the lawn. There are a ton of garbage wireless headphones out there for $10-$20 that people have sent me but I think I’ve found a really good pair worth your attention. Not only do these earbuds sound good and work much like Apple’s AirPods, but they can also be had for a great price.

MJYUN Bluetooth Truly Wireless Earbuds with Noise Cancelling and USB-C charging Case are $27.99 after using code O8CJ2DTY this weekend only.

Write-off Week! Save money on tax deductible business expenses for the rest of 2017

If you’ve talked to your accountant, he or she has probably told you that the new GOP tax plan that passed before Christmas will upend how they do accounting.  Some things we know: You’ll want to pay your state and local taxes (SALT) before the end of the year since next year they won’t be deductible from your federal taxes. Also, many deductions including moving expenses, alimony, student loan interest and tuition and fees will no longer be write-offs. So you might want to prepay or pay early what you can of these.

Most importantly for us, we know that business expenses are going to be deductible for the rest of the year so we’ll be highlighting items for the next week that can be written-off if you either have a business or can write-off purchases that go toward your business (as always consult your/an accountant for tax advice). So we present, our handy guide:

9to5Toys Top 100 for 2017 including a killer exclusive discount on #1

As we wind down 2017, the 9to5Toys team is reviewing the year to see what stories and products were your favorites. $349/ea it wasn’t nearly our best seller.

What product sold the most units? Amazon is the only US vendor that allows us to see the most accurate stats and accounts for over 55% of our sales by number so we’re going to go with their data specifically….**drumroll**

Our biggest seller was the AUKEY ULTRA COMPACT USB Wall Charger w/ Dual Port 2.4A Output

That’s not a terribly exciting product but its popularity lends itself to how helpful it is, thanks to portability and an inexpensive price. Apple only includes a 1A charger with its incredibly popular iPhone line and most phone and tablet makers only include a single port on their default chargers.

This little plug, which is a smaller size than the default one that comes with most phones charges Apple and Android devices as fast as USB-A will allow – 2.4A at 5V. And it will charge two devices at a time at that speed. It allows you to charge your iPhone twice as fast and a friend or iPad gets powered up too! It gets great reviews, a two-year warranty and our readers kept coming back for more.

Aukey, in celebrating this achievement with us, is offering our readers a chance to pick it up today and tomorrow for just $8 with code AUXMAS06 at Amazon. “Throw away Apple’s adapter and add this to your tech arsenal”.

What else sold well? There were:

  • 3 gift cards in the top 10
  • 2 smart home plugs in the top 10
  • 37 of the top 100 products mentioned “Apple” in the product title
  • Anker had 16 products in the top 100 including #3, while Aukey had 8
  • Top Non-tech? A first aid kit came in at #21, #31 was a tool set, and #37 was Crest’s White Strips (our readers have great smiles!)

9to5Toys’ 2017 Product of the Year: DJI’s Spark puts pro drone photography in everyone’s hands

Going back through the year, there have been a lot of important product introductions. Apple released its next-gen Pixel 2’s and a $399 Max which we long considered for the product of the year.

However Echo Spot which goes on sale this week

There were a ton of other products we considered this year as well. There is probably nothing better for kids than the Snap Circuits which teaches beginning electronics.

There are also honorable mentions which we should include, such as our hands-on review.

But one product outshined them all this year…

Today is 11.11 (Chinese Black Friday), get the best deals on sites like AliExpress, Gearbest, BangGood, more

In China, November 11th or 11.11 is called Guanggun Jie or Single’s Day. From Wikipedia:

Chinese Singles’ Day or Guanggun Jie (Chinese: 光棍节; pinyin: Guānggùn Jié; Wade–Giles: Kuang-kun chieh; literally: “Single Sticks’ Holiday”) is an entertaining festival widespread among young Mainland Chinese people, to celebrate the fact that they are proud of being single. The date, November 11th (11/11), is chosen because the number “1” resembles an individual that is alone. This festival has become the largest offline and online shopping day in the world, with sales in Alibaba’s sites Tmall and Taobao at US$5.8 billion in 2013, US$9.3 billion in 2014, US$14.3 billion in 2015 and over US$17.8 billion in 2016.

What being single has to do with deals is still a mystery to me, but if you are going to do some AliExpress (China’s Amazon) so let’s start there…
