There is no one like Kristen Schaal, we can all agree on that. From her voice to her sense of humor to the general amount of joy she brings to so many projects, she is nothing short of a comedy unicorn. And so today, which is also her birthday!, we are honoring her as our Woman Crush Wednesday.
WHO’S THAT GAL: Kristen Schaal
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Similar to unicorns, any Kristen Schaal spotting is guaranteed to be special. From stage to voice to on-screen acting, she’s simply a lovely, rare find. She’s plowed her way through the comedy community by being herself at every stop along the way and it’s paid off. Seemingly everyone wants to work with her (and continue to work with her over and over again on different projects!) and be her friend too — not always the case in the ol’ show business.
And while she’s largely earned her icon status from stints on BoJack Horseman, we’ve gotta talk about her current role as Carol on The Last Man on Earth. Her character was introduced right away in a manner that suggested poor Will Forte would be stuck all alone on Earth with the quirkiest woman possible. Over the course of four seasons, with the combination of excellent writing and Kristen’s charm and warmth, Carol has developed into the heart of the show. She’s a caring friend, wife (and now mom!) and most of all, an optimistic survivor. Very few other actresses could keep Carol as happy and positive while also showing such vulnerability to the character while still portraying a dynamic, complex, and utterly likable woman.
WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: While she’s popped up in episodes of everything from Flight of the Conchords, where she starred on the HBO series as Mel. She’s appeared in comedy films such as Dinner for Schmucks, and Sleepwalk With Me and The Boss.
Perhaps you know her for that one-of-a-kind voice which can be heard in Toy Story 3, Bob’s Burgers, or BoJack Horseman, among so many other guest spots on TV shows, movies, video games, and shorts.
WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Coming up this year, Kristen’s got the comedy Boundaries with Christopher Plummer, Bobby Cannavale and Vera Farmiga, and she’ll return to Toy Story 4 in 2019 as the voice of Trixie. Until then, we can’t wait to see where she takes Carol on The Last Man on Earth as a wife, new mom, friend, and general source of delight for the group and viewers alike.
