Apple TV’s hit sci-fi dramedy Pluribus is a show that not only focuses on a world-altering event, but was shot all around the world.

The visually stunning pilot, introduces us to Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), a curmudgeonly romance author who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fans of Vince Gilligan’s past work, including beloved shows Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, know that Albuquerque is his signature setting. Once again, Gilligan and his team incorporate the location into the story in such creative, engaging ways that it feel like a character all its own. But Pluribus, doesn’t just limit itself to New Mexico.

When Carol embarks on a journey to save the world after everyone except herself and 11 others are infected with happiness, Pluribus drastically widens the show’s world. So where is Pluribus filmed? And aside from New Mexico, what filming locations do viewers have to looks forward to as Season 1 progresses? We’ve got answers, along with filming location commentary from Gilligan himself.

Where Is Pluribus Filmed? Vince Gilligan Breaks Down Pluribus Filming Locations

As Pluribus progresses, characters and viewers are taken to new locations around the world. But before we explore where Pluribus is going, let’s talk a bit about home base in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“We started in New Mexico because I have loved shooting there for years and I have a wonderful crew that I never want to do without,” Gilligan shared in Pluribus production notes. While we got a glimpse of Carol’s house, cul-de-sac, and surrounding neighborhood and town in Pluribus’ pilot, as the season progresses we explore those locations in much more depth with the sun out!

And for those wondering, Carol’s quaint little neighborhood was built entirely for the show. “They built a cul-de-sac from scratch in the middle of a field on the west side of Albuquerque,” Gilligan revealed. “I wanted to have a great view of the Sandia Mountains. Our location manager Christian Diaz de Bedoya and his location scouts looked for months to find the perfect location. We leased it long term and built a real cul-de-sac with real concrete curbs and seven real houses. It was a big endeavor. It’s easy to have ideas. It’s much harder to execute them.”

Gilligan went on to explain how functional the neighborhood had to be, in order to accommodate some more ambitious scenes later in the season. “The cul-de-sac is the biggest set build I have ever written for and it beats all the previous records for sets we built on the last two shows,” Gilligan said. “The landscape is real and needed to be cared for. We had an astounding group of talented people.”

Outside of Carol’s cul-de-sac and other scenes filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Pluribus production traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada; Big Sky, Montana; Northern Spain, and the Canary Islands. While we can’t fully unpack the brilliance of these filming locations because of spoilers, here’s a deeper look at some specific places you can expect to visit in Season 1.

While it may sound like the sky was the limit for the Apple TV series, Gilligan also revealed that “There were certain places we wanted to go that didn’t work out, like Norway.” Rather than pivot scenes, however, the crew worked their magic to build a special set of their own, which can be seen at the top of Episode 3, premiering November 14.

New episodes of Pluribus premiere Fridays on Apple TV.
