New DJI gimbal brings 360° magic, if it escapes US ban

DJI has released its latest smartphone stabilizer, the Osmo Mobile 8 (OM8), with cool upgrades such as 360-degree panoramic rotation and pet tracking. But here’s the kicker: it’s currently exclusive to China, with no official word yet on when, or if, it’ll land in the US. And that uncertainty isn’t just about logistics; it’s about politics.

First off: the OM8 builds on DJI’s hallmark three-axis gimbal stabilization but adds a full 360° horizontal rotation, making sweeping pano-shots and full-circle follow moves much more intuitive. While that concept isn’t entirely novel (hello, Osmo Mobile 7P: a multi-functional tracking module.

That module handles human and pet tracking (yes, cats and dogs are explicitly included), integrates a fill-light with eight levels of brightness and eight colour-temperatures, and doubles as an audio-receiver (via USB-C) for DJI’s own mic transmitters (Mic 2 / Mic 3 / Mic Mini). In short: light, sound, and motion tracking all in one. According to DJI, the goal is simpler, smarter handheld shooting for creators who want to “unleash their creative potential.”

The build has also been upgraded: the phone clamp is now a 4th-generation magnetic mount that supports larger flagship phones (with heavier lens modules), plus the OM8 includes an extension rod and built-in tripod-legs, so you can shoot from low angles, set it up for steady capture, or extend it like a selfie stick and still have full gimbal control. Battery life is quoted at up to 10 hours, and the phone can charge via USB-C while you’re recording — handy for long-form shoots or travel vlogging.

Software-wise, the device is integrated with DJI’s Mimo app, delivering features such as AI one-click video creation, scene recognition, dual-camera tracking (wide + telephoto phone lenses), and what DJI calls “Smart Follow 7.0” for more robust subject lock-on—even in complex scenarios (multiple people, obstructions, fast movements).

Will the DJI Osmo Mobile 8 ever be available in the US?

If you’re a mobile content creator who already uses DJI gear, the OM8 is attractive: You get a well-rounded stabilizer optimized for the flagship phones many of us carry, combined with accessories that simplify lighting and sound. It could reduce your “gear load” for social media, travel, or vlog shooting.

However, and this is the big “BUT”, the US market rollout is uncertain and comes at a precarious moment for DJI. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is preparing to add DJI to its “Covered List”, a move that would make it illegal to import any DJI product that contains a radio transmitter without explicit security clearance. That includes drones, action cameras, and even gimbals like the Osmo Mobile series.

Now, DJI is not yet included on the FCC’s Covered List. But under the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a national security agency must complete a risk assessment of DJI drones by December 23, 2025. If that assessment is not completed by the deadline, DJI will automatically be added to the Covered List, without any evidence of wrongdoing or the right to appeal. And, as of now, no US agency has stepped forward to start this review process.

That means even when the OM8 is ready for global release, US creators might face delays, import restrictions, or warranty/support uncertainties. The “if” is large here: the hardware may show up, but timelines and service logistics are murkier than usual.

So, you can keep the Osmo Mobile 8 on your radar for all the boxes it ticks: large-phone compatibility, full-circle motion, built-in light + mic accessory, strong tracking for people/pets, and solid battery life. But know this, the product alone isn’t a guarantee. If you need gear now, you might consider alternatives, too.
