The Virgin Suicides Redux
Air

French pop duo Air might be best known for psych-leaning electro-pop albums like 1998’s Moon Safari and 2004’s Talkie Walkie, but no project shows their range quite like the soundtrack for Sofia Coppola’s celebrated 1999 film, The Virgin Suicides. Twenty-five years after its initial release, the band—which consists of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel—reissued the project alongside a number of outtakes, demos and alternate versions. This peek behind the curtain offers additional context for the band’s funky, dark and moody soundtrack. Standouts on disc two, which is labeled “Demos & Rarities”, include a lounge jazz vibraphone-led version of “Playground Love”. The original version, which features Gordon Tracks, is led by one of the most haunting melodies in the band’s discography. The group shares significant insight into their process on Redux, including a “Demo Strings“ version of “Playground Love” and a delightfully raw rendition of “Bathroom Girl”. Air has never sounded so unvarnished—a thrillingly far cry from the polished pop of their biggest hits.
