The Works
Apple Music Classical

This week’s The Works features pianist Eric Lu performing Schubert’s Impromptu Op. 142, No. 4, taken from Lu’s upcoming album of Schubert’s complete Impromptus. “I find Schubert’s music endlessly deep, searching and expressing the very depths of his life,” Lu tells Apple Music Classical. “He really is the most beautiful composer of all.” Lu, who scooped First Prize at the 2025 International Chopin Piano Competition, describes the piece as the “Scherzo” of Schubert’s set of Op. 142. “It’s sort of a night dance, much like the last movement of his C minor Sonata, D958. But it also has the same lilting qualities as his Ländler, although with generally much more drive.” The Works features the best of the very latest classical releases. We regularly update this playlist, so if you find a piece of music or a performance you particularly love, don’t forget to add it to your library.
