Welcome to The Works, the playlist featuring the latest and best from the world of classical music. Heading up this week’s playlist is an exhilarating performance of Ravel by the Attacca Quartet, taken from their recording of the French composer’s Quartet. Ravel’s second movement is a fine demonstration of the Attacca’s tight ensemble with its zestful pizzicato intro that zings with catchy cross rhythms. Then comes the calm, with one of the French composer’s most reflective and wistful slow central sections. “There’s an incredible range of color and a lot of pathos,” says Attacca second violinist Domenic Salerni. “With almost every one of Ravel’s pieces, if it starts super energetic, pretty quickly there’s going to be some reflective thing.” The group’s first violin Amy Schroeder paints an arresting picture: “You’re young, out on the town, and you don’t care. The night takes these different turns, with some smoky rooms, perhaps, and some more drinks to be had. Maybe you find someone to kiss that night… And then it just ends in a beautiful, fun, effervescent way.” The Works is updated regularly by our editors, so if you find a piece of music or performance you love, make sure you add it to your library.
