New York Magazine editor-in-chief David Haskell announced today that Jody Quon has been promoted to the role of creative director. In this expanded position, she will continue to lead the magazine’s acclaimed photography department while taking on a broader mandate to help shape how New York expresses itself across all platforms. She will work closely with Haskell to guide the visual identity and creative direction of the brand in print, digital, social, video, and more.

The promotion formalizes Quon’s influence on the magazine’s journalism beyond just photography. “No visual editor since the magazine’s co-founder Milton Glaser has had such a profound effect on the magazine’s journalism as Jody has in her two decades here. She is not only the best photography director in the business, but one of the most creative editorial minds anywhere. Her leadership and vision can be seen in all that we publish, and I’m excited to see what she’ll do in her new role,” said Haskell.

Since she joined New York in 2004, Quon’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the National Magazine Award for photography, several Cover of the Year awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME), a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and a George Polk Award. New York was named Magazine of the Year by the Society of Publication Designers (SPD) three times during Quon’s tenure, and has received numerous other awards from SPD as well as the Art Directors Club.

Quon has trained a generation of photo editors who have gone on to lead other publications and shape the industry, championed emerging talent, and brought acclaimed photographers and artists to the magazine’s pages, including Christopher Anderson, Barbara Kruger, Gillian Laub, Mark Seliger, Maurizio Cattelan, Ashley Peña, Pari Dukovic, Brigitte Lacombe, Bobby Doherty, Deborah Roberts, Paul Kooiker, and countless others. She has helped define the look and feel of the magazine, applying her sophisticated eye across a variety of photographic formats, and played a central role in some of its most iconic visual moments, from the magazine’s news-making indelible posterlike Creative Review: “She has helped New York Magazine make gutsy statements that others merely gesture at.”
