Welcome to Coat Week on the Strategist, where we’re asking everyone — from New Yorkers to people living in the coldest parts of the U.S. — about their favorite coats and trying out every puffer we can. For more, head over to our Coat Week hub.
As any New Yorker knows, a coat might be a lifeline — against the cold shadow Rachel Antonoff’s Parker. To find out what outerwear New Yorkers are wearing today, we asked more than 50 of them (from the born and raised to the newish to those who find themselves between Los Angeles and New York City) about theirs.
Kelsa Kuchera, artist
“I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel with this one. From November to March, my aim is to survive. The North Face puffer is what you break out when it stops being cute-cold and starts being real cold. When it’s freezing, I’m not trying to stand out; I’m in incognito mode. Look to your left, look to your right. One of you is wearing this. It’s already in your closet. This jacket is the New York standard issue for a reason: It’s warm.”

“No coat is more New York than the North Face Nuptse. It’s extremely warm but compact when needed. It’ll get you through the coldest day in February.”

“The way the big baffles compress softly against my body when I zip it up feels like getting a gentle hug. As a shorter guy, the length is flattering, hitting closer to the belt than the thigh. I like the way it looks with wide overalls or Stan Rays on the bottom. It’s great over a plain tee, or I can throw a hoodie under it if I leave it unzipped. I try to keep it out of the snow and rain, but otherwise, I wear it pretty much every day in the winter.”

“My dear friend Samuel Hardeman started Big Rock Candy Mountaineering in 2024. Last January, I braved the spine-stiffening cold of Alberta, Canada, and then — far worse — the wind tunnels by Atlantic Terminal, all thanks to my Arctic Parka. I’ve worn it ice-skating on Staten Island and rambling on long walks through lower Manhattan. It feels like traveling in an all-encompassing, self-sustaining pod that enables all manner of spontaneous behavior, even if seasonally ill advised.”

“My favorite coat at the moment is a carryover from last winter: the duffle coat. I really championed it as an alternative to the barn jacket because it has that same hint of novelty and preppiness. My go-to version is from Gloverall, the brand largely responsible for popularizing the style after WWII. The silhouette isn’t far off from your standard topcoat, though the toggle closures and hood give it distinct character. The hood is roomy enough to keep out the wind, and the coat has just the right amount of polish to feel put-together without being too precious for everyday wear.”

“Someone told me the first day I wore it that it’s a perfect fit for my ‘Mary from Party Girl’ vibe, which is always a welcome comparison. I’m a stickler about wardrobe maintenance, but one thing I love about leopard print is that if you get a weird stain, you can’t really tell. You never know what’s going to happen when you’re zipping around town all day! This coat is kind of thin but warmer than it looks, so it won’t be a pain if I end up in a narrow theater seat or wandering around a museum with no coat check.”

“I’ve been Lynnfluenced (getting fashion advice from dear friend Lynn Yaeger) to elevate my game as my business evolves. I can wear this to a breakfast meeting, through a day of appointments, and straight to dinner in the West Village without ever feeling overdressed or underdone. The shape has that perfect drape that works whether you’re walking fast down Madison or standing in line for coffee downtown.”

“I’ve grown tired of relying on my umbrella when it rains. I just end up … wet. And I hate being responsible for an umbrella. Anyway, this raincoat was my answer. The hood is perfectly baseball-cap-shaped, which helps keep the rain out of my face. I’ve worn this in the rain, but more often than not, I just wear this when it’s kind of chilly out. It’s not a raincoat that screams raincoat. I keep describing it to friends as my ‘absolutely ridiculous monk-mode coat.’”

“To know me is to know how crucial coats are to my existence and how seriously I take them as a garment. I recently unearthed a Joseph double-breasted cashmere coat that I’d purchased from the dregs of Net-a-Porter’s sale section in 2022, but I’d held off on wearing it because instinctively, the timing just didn’t feel right. (Don’t ask me to explain. Every coat chooses when it is worn, and this one’s moment would not arrive until 2025.) The onset of cold weather this year has felt particularly dreary and gray, and I love nothing more than injecting a sharp jolt of dirty mustard yellow into a sea of black puffers and tasteful neutrals when I’m walking on the street.”

Joseph Wool Trench Coat
“I bought this green vintage L.L.Bean field coat five years ago, and I wear it all the time. The thing I love most about it is that the woolen liner is removable, so it’s great for fall and winter. I got it oversize in an XXL because the cotton canvas has such a nice drape. I’ll even wear it in the club because it feels so good to have it flowing around. I love how it’s worn over the years. I actually wore it through the right shoulder (from carrying tote bags), but I was able to get a tailor to fix it up with a beautiful stitch pattern, and now I love it even more.”

“There’s something about a coat that works so effortlessly that it just fades into your life in the best way — it’s there for the mundane coffee runs and memorable date nights. It’s become the coat I reach for without thinking. Someone once told me I looked ‘like I belonged in the city,’ which felt like the highest praise. This coat has that effect — it makes you feel at home in New York.”

“I am the biggest believer in a belted coat. When I first saw Fatal Attraction at the age of 19, Glenn Close in that cinched leather trench rewired my brain. Now I want to reserve the right to snatch myself in every coat … for dramatic effect. Obviously, I’m aware that this is a FAR cry from a shiny, shoulder-padded leather trench coat. My style is very playful and bright. When it’s cold out, I try to prioritize walking the street in fun colors and textures. The silhouette of the coat is so feminine, but the hood on this is kind of tough in a boxing-robe or hater-blocker way.”

“I first spotted it on the Zara website but didn’t click ‘buy.’ Ironically, that’s the reverse psychology of online shopping. A few weeks later, I wandered into a Zara store on one of those ‘I’m just browsing’ detours that somehow always end with a shopping bag. There it was, and as I lifted it off the rack, ‘The Lady in Red,’ by Chris de Burgh, started playing in my head. At that moment, I knew this was going to be my ‘It’ suede duster for the season.”

“I found this coat by literally typing ‘robe but chic coat’ into Google, and this was one of the first results that popped up. It wears like a hug. “On a random trip to Hudson back in 2021, where my main objective was to come home with life-changing antiques, I struck out at every shop. But I did walk away with something even better: a $250 100 percent wool Max Mara coat that I’ll be wearing well into my 80s. I found it at Nina Z on Warren Street, and it singlehandedly kick-started my obsession with brown. I sometimes even wear it with brown trousers and a brown sweater, and my friends tell me I look like a Hershey’s bar — I’ll take it.”

“I have worn it a million times. What I love: It drapes very well. You can layer as little or as much with it. Like sometimes, if you wear a sweater with bulky sleeves, they scrunch up inside the coat sleeves … hate that! The cape has deep pockets (for treats when I walk with a dog). The lining feels great! The color literally goes with everything. It gives great freedom of movement. It’s also warm enough in the fall or winter and cool enough to wear at night in the summer.”

“I got it secondhand around ten years ago. It’s classic: black, double-breasted, quite long on me because I am five-three, and in the softest virgin wool. I have not been able to replace it for something newer or better. It has caught a few stray cigarette holes, and I’ve accidentally stepped through the lining going up the subway stairs, but I maintain it as much as possible because I love it. It’s quite romantic, actually.”

“I found this vintage Anna Sui carpet coat six years ago at Beacon’s Closet in one of those rare, overly fortuitous, ‘not looking for anything specific but coming out with gold’ afternoons thrifting. I’m guaranteed at least one ‘That’s a beautiful coat!’ from a stranger any time I wear it on one of the maybe ten days a year it’s seasonably perfect for. I’ve worn this coat to an opera at the Met, and I’ve worn it to a punk show at Bowery Electric. I have many, many other coats in my closet, but none can do that. I’ll never forget wearing it on an unseasonably mild afternoon in January 2020 to visit with Lee Grant at her apartment only to unexpectedly accompany her on what can only be described briefly as a screwball buddy comedy zipping around Manhattan.”

“I’ve resisted puffer coats my entire life for various reasons. I’ve also never been one to prioritize function over style when it comes to outerwear, but now that I have a child, I find myself appreciating utilitarian details more. This Hikerkind Packable Down Puffer feels like the perfect balance for me at this moment. It’s not your basic puffer — the collar detail and diagonal quilting give it a prim, park-ranger vibe, and the palatial front pockets are actually life-changing. Currently, they contain two pacifiers, a pack of Gushers, wallet, phone, my Ole Henriksen lip treatment, and Sophie the giraffe — with some room to spare! The jacket is lightweight, very easy to layer, and surprisingly warm given its relative lack of bulk. I wear it to the barn (pockets stuffed with horse treats) and to set (so I can have everything I need on me without carrying a purse). The collar conceals a stowable hood, and there is an additional kangaroo pouch in the back — though I admit I haven’t used either yet! It also packs down into a travel pillow, if you’re into that.”

“I bought this Ganni coat last year at a department store in South Korea, and a more expensive coat in my closet remains to be seen. “I call it my sleeping bag because it truly looks like I’m standing upright in a sleeping bag. Because it’s essentially a sleeping bag, it acts like a protective armor against the wind, which makes venturing to windier areas (cough, Tribeca) less painful in the dead of winter. It keeps me so warm. I love the slanted pockets with zippers (I never lose my gloves), and the buttons at the collar act as neck protection, so a scarf is more stylistic than necessity.”

“I’ve been wearing this new jacket by Camiel Fortgens almost daily since it started getting cold. The height of the stand-up collar hits exactly where I want it to, and I love the exposed zips, irregular topstitching, and raw edges of the wool fabric. Beauty in imperfection is a powerful calling card, one I employ in my own practice. I feel like a Londoner headed off to the horse race when I wear this zipped up with the bungees pulled to create a baggier appearance.”

“I am one of New York’s dreaded West Coast transplants, and the concept of fashionable outerwear is still a bit foreign to me. In the Pacific Northwest, we just buy an eye-searing Cotopaxi and call it a day. This is up-to-date enough to not look stupid, warm enough to get through another awkward Prospect Park date without needing to stop in the bathroom to warm up your hands (never works), and the loose fit makes it look like you didn’t try too hard (a secret of cool girls everywhere, or so I’ve been told). It also complements the yellowing pin oaks and gingko leaves at this time of year (not to mention all the Zohran merch).”

“Over the years, this coat hung in my mom’s closet in near-perfect condition, but time and newer purchases pushed it to the back. When I saw it in her biannual donation pile, I knew I had to save it. Truly the perfect coat for looking hot and mysterious while stomping around the city and listening to a new album in wired headphones (my greatest passion). I lost a button last winter, which was my fault entirely for ignoring the frayed threads, but have been hunting for a replacement ever since. “My mom, who is not a rich woman, bought me this coat — it’s 2014 F/W Celine — back when I was interviewing for my beauty editor job at Elle. Confidence comes from within, as we all know and dutifully rehash, but on that day, when I strode into the big, glittery, terrifyingly corporate Hearst office building and killed my interview, it was because of this coat. I love its old-world elegance, that A-line flair, the elongating silhouette that made me appear streamlined, even when I was super-duper pregnant. I might be waiting on the filthiest, scummiest subway platform, but if I’m wearing this coat, I feel like an absolute princess, and my dingy surroundings are inconsequential.”

“I bought a vintage men’s wool Margaret Howell coat at Sorbara’s in Williamsburg a while back. There were a few initial draws beyond the perfect wooly brown color. I’m a sucker for coats with good internal pockets (if I had business cards, which I do not, I would relish in producing them from an interior pocket in moments of need). Needless to say, this coat has inside pockets large enough for a wallet or a passport, and outside pockets large enough for a book or a beanie. On top of that, it’s just the right amount of oversize. Not too boxy or broad shouldered, but roomy enough to fit an egregiously dense cable-knit sweater underneath. And last of all, I find snaps so much more satisfying than buttons when it comes to coat closures.”

“I was at La Garçonne one day and spotted a pomegranate-pink canvas jacket by 6397 on the rack. I immediately put it on, and of course, it was love at first sight. Most of my outerwear is secondhand, so if I buy something brand new, there’s a long deliberation process, inspecting every angle and thinking of ways to wear it. The waist can be cinched, so it can be worn really nipped in like a bit of a diva. “I highly recommend buying a vintage Tommy Hilfiger puffer on eBay. There are tons of them and most are very reasonably priced. The men’s ones tend to have better designs than the women’s (systemic misogyny), which is great if you like a big oversize puffer, which I do. I feel like I’m in a Godard movie when I wear it. I like that it’s a cool black leather jacket but doesn’t feel as try-hard as a motorcycle jacket. It weighs about as much as a small bowling ball. I like that I can dress it up or down, wear it with a hoodie or a fur scarf, with a dress or jeans. “My favorite coat is my Dries Van Noten 2024 (2025?) wool gabardine jacket. It has the military epaulettes, which are critical if you want to evoke the state-sanctioned masculinity of a European policeman. I like pairing it with some structure-y denim and pretending I’m doing a quiet-luxury take on Hamish Macbeth, the ’90s British dramedy starring Robert Carlile as a rakish detective in a seaside village in the Scottish Highlands. “I’m lucky enough to be invited to the Prada sample sale, and I’ve purchased a few great outerwear pieces there at a price that I’m comfortable with. I just snagged this Re-nylon blouson style coat — it’s slightly cropped and boxy, a silhouette that I like, and is in a good mid-weight padded material, an inky navy blue color with taped seams and is water-resistant (not -proof). It’s a great thing to layer over a sweatshirt and will definitely be a versatile go-to for most cold days above 30ish degrees. It has a little branding on the side, which is subtle but still kinda flashy in the way that I like (sadly, I am a tacky label whore). It’s sporty, low-key, and super-versatile.”

I wore it for a premiere, but I’m currently working with Cole Durkee (creative director) to add the exact runway coat to my collection. It’s the most psycho coat ever. I feel like a futuristic game-show host in it.”

“This past summer I did color analysis in Seoul and it rocked my world — I found out I’m supposed to wear soft pastels and neutrals, not the white and black I’ve worn like a uniform my entire adulthood. This chic, beltless trench coat was the first piece I bought post-analysis, and I’ve since gotten a ton of compliments on it — coincidence? I love the smart, subtle details that no one else notices (I notice) like the welt pockets and the way the back vent drapes just so. I also appreciate that it’s extra-long — it falls at mid-calf on me, which is hard to find in outerwear for my five-ten frame.”

“I imagined myself wearing it over sweatpants for a Saturday stroll around the neighborhood — with an inevitable stop at Joe Junior’s for pancakes and hot coffee. But now, this coat comes everywhere with me: on my morning commute, to a casual dinner at friends’ apartments, to spontaneous hangs on my beloved Saint Mark’s Place, or to an afternoon at the Met.”

“I got this in a gray herringbone color two years ago because I didn’t have a ‘fancy’ winter coat I could wear over a dress, and it’s made me a long-coat convert! Who knew your little legs didn’t have to freeze just because of some silly necessity like mobility (or an unencumbered stride)? Don’t watch me going up stairs wearing this because as a I’ll often step on the hem. I usually just wrap it around myself and tie the belt like a bathrobe and it stays snug on me.”
