67 HURT AS LIRR TRAINS ‘BUMP’

Two Long Island Rail Road trains collided on the same track in Queens yesterday, causing minor injuries to at least 67 passengers plus brief delays, a spokesman said.

The accident occurred around noon at Jamaica Station as an arriving Hempstead-to-Penn Station train, carrying 140 passengers, “bumped” a departing Ronkonkoma-to-Penn Station train, carrying 630 ticket-holders, said LIRR spokesman Brian Dolan.

The first car of the Hempstead train, traveling around 5 mph, “made contact” with the last car of the Ronkonkoma train, Dolan said.

The crash injured at least 67 passengers, the majority of whom refused treatment, Dolan said. Thirty hurt rail-riders, however, were taken to various hospitals for arm, back and neck pain, he added.
