Surfers at High Tide

It was “Flame On” for “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” which defied awful reviews (38 percent favorable at Rotten Tomatoes) to open with $22.7 million yesterday, including Midnight shows. That should translate to between $55 and $60 million dollars during its opening weekend, possibly passing the first installment. Audiences gave the cold shoulder to “Nancy Drew” (53 percent favorable at RT), which should end the weekend with $8-9 million. And the Weinstein Co.’s long-shelved and unscreened-for-critics “DOA: Dead or Alive” was dead on arrival, with the video game adaptation collecting a meagre $78,000 at 550 mostly empty theaters on Friday. “Knocked Up” continued to demonstrate its legs with a healthy 26 percent Friday-to-Friday drop, while “Ocean’s Thirteen” dropped 52 percent, “Surf’s Up” dropped 51 percent — and “Hostel II” appeared headed for a quick trip to DVD with a 71 percent slide.
