State Sen. John Sampson, the head of the Democratic Conference, will attempt to ram through several last-minute amendments to school-governance legislation in exchange for extending Mayor Bloomberg’s control over schools, sources said last night.
Sampson — heeding the wishes of critics of mayoral control within his 32-member conference — is considering proposals requiring schools to maintain arts and physical-education programs.
“I know a school in my district that has violins collecting dust,” said Sen. Shirley Huntley (D-Queens), who is helping craft the amendments.
Sampson is also eyeing proposals for independent oversight of school construction and school-safety issues.
