Accused psycho slasher Maksim Gelman was the picture of calm in Manhattan Criminal Court today, where he finally appeared to face charges that he slashed a man on an uptown 3 train at Times Square.
The attack was the last in what officials said was a 28-hour rampage that left four people dead and four others injured.
Gelman – who missed his last Manhattan court appearance because he’d been acting up in Bellevue’s prison psych-ward – seemed sedate as he appeared in court via closed circuit television from the hospital.
“All right. Thank you,” he told his lawyer after she handed him her card.
Gelman, 23, has been charged with attempted murder and assault for attacking on James Lozito on the subway.
According to the criminal complaint, Gelman, 23, “pulled out a large knife and said to Mr. Lozito, in substance, ‘You’re going to die!'” He then “started slashing and stabbing at Mr. Lozito with that knife, causing Mr. Lozito substantial pain and serious physical injury.”
By the time the horrifying attack was over, Lozito had at least three gashes on the back of his head, a cut on the top of his head, and slashes on his face and left arm, the complaint says. Medical staff needed 26 staples and 20 stitches to close his wounds. A nearby cop collared Gelman moments after the attack.
Gelman was ordered held without bail pending his next hearing on March 15 in Manhattan Supreme Court, when he’ll be arraigned.
He’s facing more serious charges in Brooklyn, where cops said he was behind a blood-soaked terror spree that began with his killing his mother’s boyfriend. He then murdered a woman named Yelena Buchenko who’d rebuffed his advances and her mother.
He capped off the killing spree by running over a pedestrian after a violent carjacking.
