Democrat Steve Bellone was elected the new Suffolk County executive last night as voters overwhelmingly chose the Babylon town supervisor over Republican Angie Carpenter.
Bellone had 57 percent to 43 for Carpenter, the Suffolk treasurer, with 97 percent of the ballots counted.
The race was to replace Dem-turned-GOPer Steve Levy, who announced he wasn’t seeking another term after investigators started looking into campaign fund-raising irregularities.
Bellone now faces an estimated $135 million county deficit and the possibility of laying off hundreds of workers.
On Staten Island, Republican DA Dan Donovan, also running on the Independent line, once again defeated Democrat Michael Ryan.
Donovan had more than twice as many votes as Ryan, with 75 percent of precincts having reported, the Staten Island Advance reported.
In Yonkers, Democrat Mike Spano was leading, with 56 percent, while John Murtagh had 34 percent, with two-thirds of the votes counted.
In New Jersey, a pair of Democrats kept their state Senate seats in two closely watched races in Atlantic and Bergen counties.
Sens. Jim Whelan and Bob Gordon won re-election.
