Newark-bound flight from Tel Aviv makes emergency landing in Israel

TEL AVIV — A Continental Airlines flight from Tel Aviv to Newark was forced to make an emergency landing at Ben Gurion airport Wednesday after the pilot saw smoke coming from the baggage compartment, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The plane, which was carrying 280 passengers, turned around shortly after take-off. It sent an alert at 12:20 p.m. local time, and landed safely.

Checks found that there was nothing wrong with the plane, a spokesman for Israeli Airports Authority was quoted as saying by Germany’s DPA news agency.

It was ready to fly again after being given the all-clear, the report said.
