Great interest in this check

Neither a major bank nor the city noticed that $30 million had gone missing for almost four years.

Now Deutsche Bank, which claimed the money as a tax refund in 2005, is demanding more than $9 million in interest, claiming its check didn’t arrive until late 2008.

The city insists it mailed the refund on schedule. The bank says it never received it, and only a second request three years and nine months later led the Finance Department to finally cough it up — without interest.

The issue goes to the Tax Appeals tribunal next week.

Bank lawyer Stephen Solomon questioned why no city official noticed that a $30 million check hadn’t been cashed.
