Menswear capital Williamsburg boasts shops for every kind of guy

Williamsburg has a long established, internationally known reputation as Brooklyn’s haven of hipsterdom. But it wasn’t until recently that a guy could find a decent menswear store there. And while the neighborhood is now home to as many high-rent condos and Starbucks as bohemian hot spots, it also offers a kaleidoscope of shops for every type of guy.

Whether you’re looking for an asymmetrical statement piece, a perfectly worn pair of vintage jeans or bespoke suiting, the ’hood now has it all.

Brooklyn Tailors, 358 Grand St.

The uber-chic Brooklyn Tailors offers all levels of sartorial customization, from off-the-rack and ready-to-wear jackets, to made-to-measure and individual bespoke suiting. It’s also one of the best places in New York City to pick up a beautifully made (yet still affordable) oxford shirt.

Gentry, 109 S. 5th St.

Nestled in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge is Gentry, a shop that presents what is arguably the most expansive men’s selection in the neighborhood. Whether you’re looking to drop a couple of hundred bucks on some Orslow Japanese denim jeans or a pair of military-cool olive kicks — or if you’d rather splurge on the likes of a look-at-me Junya Watanabe patchwork jacket — Gentry has you covered.

ID Menswear, 232 Bedford Ave.

ID Menswear, perched on Williamsburg’s main stroll, perfectly encapsulates the neighborhood’s masculine-nouveau look. The store displays everything from shoes and leather bags to an entire wall of denim. And it’s one of the few places in town where you can buy both a bow tie and a pair of Persol sunglasses.

Alter, 407 Graham Ave. and 140 Franklin St.

Boasting two locations (one in Williamsburg and the other in Greenpoint), the clothier Alter carries the likes of Cheap Monday denim and Hudson Shoes, as well as their own Alter house label, created by store owners Roy Caires and Tommy Cole.

Robinson Brooklyn, 85 N. 3rd St.

Those in search of more upscale finery should look no further than Robinson Brooklyn,the flagship store of designer Craig Robinson. Designed to look and feel like an old-fashioned haberdashery, the shop offers a fresh take on classically tailored suiting, as well as finely hewn bathrobes and wool hats.

Oak, 55 Nassau Ave.

Just down the street from Williamsburg’s McCarren Park stands Oak. Known for its limited color palette (a rainbow of black, white and gray) and gothy sense of futurism, the shop remains the place to go when you’re looking for a black one-piece boiler suit (courtesy of the store’s own label), a bottle of tobacco-leaf cologne by Coqui Coqui or a pair of Rick Owens sneakers that could double as alien spaceships for your feet.

Cadet, 46 N. 6th St.

For something a little more structured, stop by Cadet to peruse the ’50sand ’60s-inspired togs. Characterized by clean lines and a militaristic vibe, all of the store’s clothes are designed and manufactured in the brand’s own factory, just a few subway stops away in Bushwick.

Ad Hoc, 135 N. Wythe Ave. and 10 Bedford Ave.

Few shopping spots in Williamsburg are as meticulously curated as the two locations of Ad Hoc, which consistently present a colorfully playful selection of clothing and accessories that you didn’t know you needed but probably can’t live without.

This includes staple items from stalwart brands like Pendleton and Woolrich, as well as beautiful leather goods from Libero Ferrero and must-have accessories from Swedish bag brand Sandqvist, not to mention cool collaborations with local artists and artisans.

Grand Street Bakery, 602 Grand St.

Stylish recycling and dashing debuts are the name of the game at Grand Street Bakery. Housed in the remains of a former bakery, this beautifully attenuated spot serves up the perfect mix of new and old — expertly chosen vintage pieces (denim, accessories, shoes) are on show alongside antique rugs (also for sale) as well as artisanal grooming products and a selection of funky vinyl records.

With an espresso machine in the back and so many fashions to ogle, it’s the perfect spot to take a breather during your boys’ day out in Brooklyn.
