About 50 children on the Upper West Side marched on Wednesday from their middle school to the street where a yellow cab driver struck and killed their classmate in a crosswalk.
Officials renamed West End and 97th Street, the site of the crash, as “Cooper Stock Way” in the memory.
The grieving students wore white shirts that read “Cooper’s Troopers,” and released blue and orange balloons in his memory. They were the team colors of the Knicks, Stock’s favorite team.
Student Jacob Hume, 10, cried and hugged Stock’s mom as he shared his memories of him.
“Cooper was the kind of person that made you feel good about yourself,” said Hume. “It’s devastating. I miss Cooper every day of my life.”
Stock’s mother Dana Lerner said the tragedy not charged criminally, even though her child and husband had the right of way.
The driver Koffi Komlani was given a traffic ticket and a $580 fine.
“Since Cooper’s death, our city has lost more wonderful children and that shatters my heart,” said Lerner.
She added that she was proud the street was renamed after her son.
“He was an incredible child, and he deserves this honor,” she said.
