When Vince Lombardi coached the Green Bay Packers to the first-ever Super Bowl championship in 1967, he probably never imagined the sophisticated operation it would become.
Blockbuster halftime performances, glitzy corporate sponsorships and multimillion-dollar ad spots are elaborate accessories to the action on the field.
Now marking its 50th edition, the iconic championship game will be played in Santa Clara, Calif., in the Bay Area, on Feb. 7.
And the NFL is touting another off-the-field aspect.
In honor of the milestone, the league is teaming up with the CFDA to create 50 one-of-a-kind footballs decorated by top fashion designers.
The haute pigskins are jewel-encrusted, beaded, studded and embellished.
In other words, we’re sure Patriots coach Bill Belichick is itching to pair one with his trademark hoodie.
But for that rare fan who appreciates both art and aggression, it’s a perfect collaboration.
The bespoke balls, decorated by the likes of Suno, Prabal Gurung, Nicole Miller and Marchesa, are now available for auction on NFL.com.
Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit NFL Foundation.
