Ex-employee executed boss, colleague over money gripe

A disgruntled ex-employee of a mortgage business on Staten Island who was owed money shot and killed his former boss and an ex-colleague execution-style inside the business, a law enforcement source told The Post Wednesday.

The former employee showed up to Universal Merchant Funding in Midland Beach armed and wearing a mask just before shooting dead owner Michael Genovese, 57, and employee Carl Clark, 52, inside a back office around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, the source said.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce did not identify the shooter as an ex-employee at an unrelated press conference Wednesday, but did say that “one or two” of the victims “were purposely targeted by the shooter.”

Both, Genovese of Edgewater, New Jersey and Clark, of Staten Island, were shot three times at close range, Boyce said.

Emergency responders pronounced both men dead at the scene.

“Right now we don’t believe it’s a robbery,” Boyce said, noting that cops believe the shooter knew one of both of the victims and there were no immediate connections to organized crime.

An employee eyewitness to the horrific murders ran outside the business and flagged down a passerby who called 911, Boyce said.

Another woman who saw the mayhem from a distance also called 911.

No surveillance cameras were inside the office where the shootings occurred.

Police described the gunman as a black man standing about 6-foot-6.
