Damien Woody could not believe his eyes and ears when the news broke about Darrelle Revis’ violent altercation last Sunday morning on the streets of Pittsburgh that led to four felony charges and a warrant for his arrest.
Woody, the former Jets guard who played with Revis from 2008-10, was scrolling through Twitter on Thursday evening when he saw the news, and when he saw it he thought he was seeing the facts wrong.
“When I saw it I was shocked,’’ Woody, a current ESPN studio analyst, told The Post on Saturday. “In my time with Darrelle — and I’ve known Darrelle for a long time — I’ve never seen him caught up in any type of activity like that before. I mean anything remotely like that.
“So when I saw it on Twitter, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Something’s wrong, something’s not right here. This can’t be. This is not Darrelle. This is not the guy that I know.’ ’’
Woody said he knew Revis as a quiet leader who led by example and was not vocal in the locker room. He said he saw a player the teammates in the room respected.
“He’s always been like, real laid-back and chill and jovial, just cracking jokes,’’ Woody said. “So I’m just shocked, just really shocked. I’m still in the beginning stages of trying to dig into it. But just knowing him, I’m just like, ‘Never.’ ’’
Woody said he is eager for actual details of the truth to come out in the case, because at the moment there appear to be holes in the story when it comes to what actually occurred.
“Looking at the story, it seems like no one saw Darrelle actually throw a punch,’’ Woody said. “I guess a witness said that people were knocked out, but nobody saw Darrelle throw a punch. My thing is like, OK, if an eyewitness was there and nobody saw Darrelle throw a punch, to me, it just seems sketchy. I don’t know. That’s why I just want to see how it’s all played out.
“I’m not judging Darrelle at all, because I want to wait and see how everything plays out,’’ Woody added. “But from my perspective, this is definitely out of character for Darrelle, because I’ve never experienced Darrelle exhibiting any type of behavior that was talked about [from Sunday night].
“These are serous charges. Nobody saw him throw a punch, but he’s getting charged with four felonies? That’s absolutely weird. But just knowing Darrelle like I know him, it’s hard for me to picture him doing something like that.’’
Woody said Revis, outside the locker room, “did his own thing.”
“He kind of hung out with people outside of the Jets,” he said. “Darrelle hung out with teammates, but I don’t know if anyone on the team was his best friend.’’
