Jay Cutler is the sad version of Tony Romo

Jay Cutler could be taking a page out of Tony Romo’s new playbook.

The free agent quarterback is exploring broadcasting opportunities, sources confirmed to NFL.com on Thursday.

Cutler, 33, who was released by the Chicago Bears after eight seasons, auditioned for a possible role with Fox, according to ESPN. Cutler’s agent, Bus Cook, remains steadfast his client has not turned the page on football entirely.

“As far as I know, he wants to play football and would play if the right offer came along,” Cook told NFL.com, but refrained from commenting on potential TV endeavors given he only handles Cutler’s NFL contracts.

“You have to talk to Jay about that. Any football player would be smart to explore his options in case he doesn’t want to play anymore. But Jay is as talented as any quarterback out there right now.”

The move from the huddle to the broadcasting booth mirrors Romo’s after the Cowboys quarterback retired from the NFL in early April to accept a job at CBS. But there are significant differences in the their retirements. Romo piqued interest from around the league, particularly with the Texans and Broncos, whereas the response to Cutler’s availability has been non-existent.

Cutler is trying out for TV gigs, whereas Romo was handed the spot in the No. 1 booth, usurping Phil Simms for a spot next to Jim Nantz.

GM Rick Smith denied that.

“I don’t know why that was reported,” Smith said on ESPN Radio, per ProFootballTalk. “That’s just not true. I will tell you that that is not true.”

For now, Cutler waits for his phone to ring from a team or a network.
