Trump: I fired Comey because he ‘wasn’t doing a good job’

President Trump on Wednesday made his first public comments on his sudden firing of FBI Director James Comey.

“He wasn’t doing a good job. Very simply. He was not doing a good job,” Trump replied when a reporter asked the reason.

Asked if his decision had any effect on his meeting Wednesday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the president replied, “Not at all.”

Lavrov feigned ignorance on the subject, heckling reporters who asked about Comey.

“Was he fired?” he asked at the White House. “You’re kidding! You’re kidding!”

The foreign minister was the highest-ranking Russian official Trump has met with as president.

The sitdown was closed to press — the sixth consecutive day that Trump has held no public events.

Trump’s comments came during an unannounced meeting with Henry Kissinger in the Oval Office.

Trump said he met with Kissinger to talk “about Russia and various other matters,” according to a White House pool report.

“We’re talking about Syria and I think that we’re going to do very well with respect to Syria and things are happening that are really, really, really positive,” Trump added. “We’re going to stop the killing and the death.”

Trump circled back and said it was “an honor” to discuss the issues with Kissinger because “he’s been a friend of mine for a long time.”

Trump also said he had a “very, very good meeting” with Lavrov, and that the US and Russia both want to end “the killing — the horrible, horrible killing in Syria as soon as possible and everybody is working toward that end.”
