Central Park Zoo ‘bird man’ sparks standoff with police

An emotionally disturbed man hopped into a bird enclosure at the Central Park Zoo Sunday, perching himself on some rocks — and sparking a four-hour standoff with police that ended with no injuries to man or beast.

Cops responded to the zoo at around 3:30 p.m., after receiving a call that an individual had gotten into an off-limits area of the Tropic Zone aviary house, according to police.

The scruffy-looking man spent more than three hours lounging on the rocks with the birds in the indoor, “free-flight” exhibit, home to Victoria crowned pigeons and other exotic wildlife, including emerald tree boas and black-and-white ruffed lemurs.

He was sitting roughly 20 feet from the ground and threatening to jump, authorities said.

A photo posted on Twitter showed a number of police vehicles in the park as negotiators attempted to talk the man down.

He eventually agreed around 7:30 p.m. and was taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation, cops said.

The zoo remained open throughout the incident, cops said, although the exhibit was off limits.
