An awkward Thanksgiving invite mishap has turned into a tradition.

In 2016, Wanda Dench, a granny from Mensa, Arizona, accidentally texted Jamal Hinton, a teenager from Chandler, Arizona. Thinking Hinton was her grandchild, she invited him to her holiday dinner.

Though Hinton quickly alerted Dench to her mistake (“You not my grandma,” he replied), Dench didn’t retract her invite. Hinton wound up joining Dench for dinner, and their unlikely friendship went viral on social media.

The meal must have gone well, because this Thanksgiving, Dench invited Hinton again. He accepted, and even brought his girlfriend with him.

“For him to continue with the relationship, I’m just really pleasantly surprised,” Dench told The Arizona Republic. “We’re more of [an] extended family and, best of all, friends.”

Hinton Tweeted selfies of him with Dench on Thanksiving 2016 and 2017, charming people online.
