Al D’Amato describes ‘heartache’ of wife’s ‘delusions’

Former US Sen. Al D’Amato broke down in tears outside a Long Island courtroom Monday, saying his estranged wife’s alleged psychotic episode has caused him “heartache.”

D’Amato, 80 — who is battling Katuria Smith, 51, over the custody of their kids — said police took her to a hospital for an evaluation against his wishes after she reported that “intruders” were shooting “green lasers” into their Lido Beach, LI, home.

“I didn’t want them to take her away. It’s a heartache,” D’Amato said. “They didn’t take her in because I urged them.”

In court, a cop testified that Smith appeared to be “delusional and paranoid”— and was hiding in a closet with a locked-up shotgun on Sept. 30.

“She was cowering in the closet with the weapon, that she couldn’t load it because she couldn’t find the key,” said Nassau County Officer Jimmy Lee.

D’Amato served in Congress from 1981 to 1999 and now runs the lobbying firm Park Strategies.
