Clint Frazier placed on the IL as Yankees’ injury woes continue

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Aaron Boone wanted to get the results of an MRI exam of Clint Frazier’s left ankle before speculating if the Yankees were going to put the outfielder on the injured list.

“Let’s get the information evaluated and see where we are at,’’ Boone said before Wednesday night’s 6-5 win over the Angels at Angel Stadium where infielder Tyler Wade started in left field for the second straight game.

Following the Yankees’ sixth straight win Boone announced Frazier was going on the 10-day IL with an ankle injury. The move pushes the number of Yankees on the shelf to 13 and came on the day Gary Sanchez walked off the IL and back on the roster.

“They feel it is a 10 to 14-day thing so we don’t feel like it is a long thing,’’ Boone said. “(Frazier) feels like he could play or is close to playing but the MRI exam revealed enough in there of a partial tear and stuff and it is going to cost him.’’

Frazier declined to talk following Wednesday night’s game.

Instead of elevating a position player the Yankees recalled right-handed reliever Joe Harvey who they sent out Monday.

Frazier was injured Monday night getting back to second base on a pickoff attempt when he rolled the ankle on the bag. He remained in the game and vowed to play Tuesday but didn’t.

Initially the doctor who examined Frazier didn’t feel a need for an MRI exam according to Boone. But when the ankle was discolored on Wednesday Frazier went for the test.

Losing Frazier is the latest big blow to the Yankees. In his last six games Frazier hit .355 (11-for-31) with three homers and seven RBIs. For the season Frazier was at .324 (22-for-68) with six homers and 17 RBIs in 18 games. The 17 RBIs were second on the team next to Luke Voit’s 19.
