Trump backs Boris Johnson after UK Supreme Court ruling

President Trump showed unwavering support Tuesday for Boris Johnson after a UK Supreme Court ruling that his decision to suspend Parliament ahead of a Brexit vote was unlawful and calls for the British prime minister to step down.

“I’ll tell you, I know him well, he’s not going anywhere,” Trump told reporters in a meeting with Johnson at the United Nations.

“It takes a man like this to get it done,” he added. “I don’t see another vote.”

Johnson was asked by reporters about the calls from Brexit opponents to resign.

“As I said earlier on, let’s be absolutely clear, we respect the judiciary in our county, we respect the court. I disagree profoundly with why they had to say,” Johnson said.

“Frankly, we need to get on with Brexit,” he added. “Whether they voted to leave or remain, they want to get this thing done by Oct. 31 — and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Trump was also asked about the ruling.

“I had no reaction,” the president said. “I just asked Boris and for him, it’s just another day in the office.”

Johnson then interjected, “It’s another day in Parliament,” to laughter.

Johnson, who faces an Oct. 31 deadline to withdraw the United Kingdom from the European Union, shut down Parliament earlier this month until Oct. 14, prompting outrage from opponents who accused him of trying to stifle debate about Brexit.
