Brian Daboll won’t turn Daniel Jones into something he’s not

The patient needs to be rehabilitated, the franchise desperately wants the patient to be rehabilitated, and on the day that he was introduced as the new HC of the NYG, this much seemed apparent: Brian Daboll has the kind of bedside manner that should make a franchise feel optimistic about Operation Daniel Jones.

The bond between head coach and franchise quarterback, young or old, is critical, and Daboll was hired because of the coach he is … and the person he is.

“I know we talked about whether I’m gonna call plays, not call plays, that’s still yet to be determined, but that’s probably one of the most important relationships in the building,” Daboll told The Post, “because there’s so much trust that has to go into that relationship.

“It’s an incredibly difficult position to play, and coach, and we all know that when things go well, the quarterback probably gets too much of the credit, and when things go poorly, he gets too much of the blame. There’s not any other position like that on a football team. Whether it’s the head coach, the offensive play-caller or the quarterback, that probably holds true for all three of those things. Look, there’s gotta be great give-and-take with those three people, and I think it’s comforting to know when you have a good relationship and you can support one another when things are a little bit hectic outside, you feel like, ‘OK, this guy’s got my back. I got his back.’ I think that’s important.”

It’s a wonder Jones, whose neck is expected to be ready for Week 1, doesn’t need back surgery after the last two years under Joe Judge and his play-callers, Jason Garrett and Freddie Kitchens.

It’s no wonder why Josh Allen loves Daboll as a great coach and human being.

“There’s X’s and O’s, but this is a people business,” Daboll said. “It’s about leading, it’s about cultivating and it’s about inspiring.”

Daboll sounded inspired at the sight of Jones in the facility on Saturday.

“Drove through the snowstorm, weren’t many people in the building, one of them was Daniel Jones,” Daboll said. “That’s a good thing for a young player. I know he’s excited.”

Daboll wasted no time building his relationship with Jones.

“One of the things I asked him to do — I said, ‘Hey, give me some things that you really liked in your last three years you did at Duke,’ ” Daboll told him. “That’s where it’s gonna start, is some foundational pieces that he feels comfortable with. I think we’ll add good coaches, we’ll have a good support system and we’ll try to bring in the best players we can bring. But I think this is gonna be a day-to-day process, I’m not gonna put any expectations on him. I know he wants to do well, he’s got the right mindset, he’s dedicated, he’s a hard worker and I’m looking forward to working with him. We are looking forward to working with him.”

They will not be comparing him to Josh Allen. Jones needs Daboll more than Daboll needs Jones — unless and until Jones can prove in Year 4 he can be the Quarterback of the Future.

“I don’t think that’s fair to compare him to another guy that I was working with,” Daboll said. “He’s himself. We’re gonna find out what he does well, we’re gonna try to implement a system that suits him. And then it’s our job to bring pieces in that to help him to be the best version of himself and the best quarterback for us. He’s got the right mindset, he’s got good size. There’s a lot of things to like about Daniel. We’re gonna try to give him some stability and just take it from there.”

This is the way Daboll helped build Josh Allen.

“Four years ago with Josh we started together, we had consistency, we had consistency in scheme, we had consistency with the coaches … it took time to build,” Daboll saiid. “It didn’t happen overnight. I wouldn’t do that to Daniel or really any other player, I think that’s unfair. I want to get to really know Daniel first, see what makes him tick and then we’ll take it one day at a time. I know he’s really willing. But to compare where Josh is or Daniel, I don’t think that’s fair to do to either one of those guys.”

During the press conference, Daboll’s regular-guy persona and quick wit surfaced: “This is going great — my 4-year-old fell asleep.” When a reporter with a pronounced Brooklyn accent began to speak, Daboll cracked, “Are you from South Carolina?” Brian Daboll won’t try to be anybody other than Brian Daboll.

“If you have good integrity, if you have good loyalty, I think that leads to trust, which is a foundational pillar for any successful organization regardless of it’s football or anywhere else,” Daboll said. “Trust leads to respect, and then respect leads to accountability which is what we all want to be to one another when you’re working for a common goal.”

Bill Parcells and Phil Simms were competitive SOBs who could rage at one another and thrive because theirs became a relationship built on trust and respect. Everyone can recall Eli Manning fighting back tears in the auditorium on the day when Tom Coughlin stepped down. At his jersey retirement, Manning said: “He taught me just the importance of preparation and hard work and team above self.”

Terry Bradshaw couldn’t stand Chuck Noll but they won four Super Bowls together in Pittsburgh with a legendary supporting cast. “So while I had a hard time with him, that’s OK,” Bradshaw said once. “He was a great coach, man.”

Operation Daniel Jones has begun.

“Brian is an excellent leader, teacher and coach,” John Mara said. “He has worked on both sides of the ball in this league, but he is known for his ability to develop young quarterback talent and tailor an offense to suit his personnel.

“We believe he is just what we need at this time.”

Just what Dr. Mara ordered.
