Mayor Adams vows to send even more desk cops back to streets after Post report

Mayor Eric Adams on Monday said he plans to force even more cops to trade in their cushy desk and maintenance duties for the streets, after The Post exclusively reported uniformed precinct “plant managers” are being put back on patrol amid soaring crime.

“They were hired to go after dangerous, bad people,” the mayor, a former NYPD transit officer, told reporters of city cops.

“Too many police officers are doing clerical duties,” he said.

“We’re going to continue to decrease the number” of cops doing desk duty, and a “substantial” number more will be sent back to “operational duties” such as daily patrol and transit-train runs, Adams said.

As The Post revealed Sunday, NYPD uniformed officers working as precinct “plant managers” — usually overseeing building maintenance upkeep — are having their roles discontinued amid a rising crime

The change, which goes into effect immediately, is part of the NYPD’s “effort to maximize the number of uniformed members assigned to perform patrol duties,” according to an internal memo reviewed by The Post.

Adams said at Monday’s press conference that he is keeping his campaign promise by getting more cops back on the streets through redeployment tactics.

The joy of Eric Adams,” the mayor quipped. “I’m doing what I said!”

But the officers being forced back on the streets after spending their days taking care of the precinct lounge probably aren’t too joyful.

“Cops would kill their mothers for the plant manager spot,” a retired NYPD officer who used to have the plum gig told The Post on Sunday.

Each of the 77 precincts had a plant manager before the memo, the source said. The coveted position was in high demand among New York’s Finest, the source added.

The developments come as the latest NYPD figures Monday show major crimes such as rape and robbery continue to surge 36% year to date, although murders and shootings are down about 10%.
