Ohio dad Mitchell Duckro chuckles in cop interview after shooting daughter’s ex-beau James Rayl

An Ohio dad who fatally shot his daughter’s ex-boyfriend laughed during a police interview hours after the deadly encounter, video of the grilling shows.

Mitchell Duckro, 52, fired three shots at James Rayl, 22, after he tried to force his way into the family’s Sydney, Ohio, home July 31.

One bullet blasted Rayl in the back as he ran away and he died at the scene, chilling Ring doorbell camera video shows.

A few hours later, Duckro was interviewed by a detective at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, walking the cop through the clash, the Daily Mail reported.

Duckro said his wife, Stacie, and daughter, Allyson, had been trying to get Rayl to leave, but he wouldn’t listen, so the dad went into the bedroom to grab his 9mm handgun.

As he was debating whether to call 911, Duckro said, he noticed Rayl “started to jiggle the handles and stuff to see if it was locked, and that was when I went up to the door.”

Determined to keep Rayl from getting inside, Duckro said he was telling the spurned lover “to stop and leave and get off my porch, or something.”

“I had my (gun) in my hand, and then he started hitting it with his shoulder, pretty hard,” Duckro recounted. “Eventually, he was getting in, and when the door was open is when I shot.”

Duckro said when he first tried to open fire, he realized the clip wasn’t in and “freaked out,” but managed to get the gun to work and squeezed off three rounds.

“They were all through the glass. He (Rayl) had turned and went off the porch and it’s kind of hard to remember after that,” Duckro said. “We was all freaking out, obviously. I saw his legs lying there.”

Duckro appeared somber while detailing the shooting, but he and the detective conducting the interview shared a laugh when the conversation turned to his daughter Allyson’s reluctance to discuss her relationship with Rayl.

The detective then said, “Daughters don’t want to talk too much with their dads about that stuff” — drawing a grin from Duckro.

Duckro said he didn’t recall meeting Rayl prior to his and Allyson’s breakup, and that his daughter and her ex hadn’t talked or texted for two years — until the night before the shooting.

“It seemed like it was all taken care of, and everyone went their separate ways, but I guess not,” Duckro said.

During her own police interview, Allyson Duckro, 22, told deputies she and Rayl broke up in 2019 after dating for a year, and that she blocked him on social media.

She claimed Rayl was verbally abusive during their relationship, and that he “changed” after their split, and moved to California temporarily.

The night before the shooting, Rayl had left a voicemail for Allyson, which was released by his sister, who’s been leading a campaign demanding justice for her brother.

“Hi Ally, it’s James,” Rayl says softly on the recording. “I just wanted to reach out to you because I just wanted to see how you’re doing, and maybe hear from you, if that would be all right, I guess.

“It’s been a while since I’ve talked to you and I don’t know, I feel like, I don’t know what I feel.”

While speaking to the cops, Allyson claimed she “freaked out” after hearing her ex-boyfriend’s message.

During the shooting incident, she said she was hiding and screaming in terror.

Afterward, Allyson was overheard on a 911 call comforting her father, telling him: “Dad, there’s nothing you could have done. You saved my life.”

A grand jury in August voted 8-1 against indicting Duckro for Rayl’s killing, citing Ohio’s “State Your Ground” laws.
