Appalachian State football forced to sleep in hotel hallways, lobby after upsetting Texas A&M

The Appalachian State football team stayed in College Station a few extra hours following its massive upset victory Saturday over No. 6 Texas A&M.

With the Mountaineers’ charter experiencing mechanical issues, the team returned to the hotel it had stayed the previous night.

There were no rooms available, however, so players and coaches hung out or slept in the lobby, hallways, and conference rooms, according to ESPN, before returning to the airport for a 4:30 a.m. takeoff for their flight back to North Carolina.

Appalachian State’s 17-14 victory over the Aggies was one of two top-10 road upsets pulled off by Sun Belt Conference teams on Saturday, along with Marshall’s 26-21 win at No. 8 Notre Dame. A third conference school, Georgia Southern, posted a 45-42 victory at Nebraska.

ESPN will hold its College GameDay pregame show at Appalachian State on Saturday, marking the program’s first appearance in Boone, N.C., in school history.

Appalachian State, which earned a $1.25 million fee for playing at Texas A&M, nearly defeated North Carolina in its previous game before dropping a wild 63-61 decision.
