Girl, 5, shot in the back while sitting in car near vigil for man gunned down a day earlier: sources

A 5-year-old girl was shot while sitting in a car in the Bronx Friday night near a vigil for a man who was gunned down a day earlier, police and sources said.

The girl was inside a vehicle outside 720 East 214th St. when three or four suspects opened fire just after 7 p.m., according to the NYPD and sources. 

One of the bullets struck the child in the back, cops said. Her father than drove the car around the block to White Plains Road, where he parked and called police, sources said.

The child was taken to Montefiore Hospital in critical condition and will undergo surgery.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the girl and her family were attending the memorial on East 214th Street or just driving by.

The gathering was in memory of a 26-year-old man who was fatally shot in the area early Thursday morning, sources said.  

The beige Nissan the child was inside was spotted on White Plains Road with a single bullet hole through its trunk. 

An abandoned child’s shoe sat in the street nearby.

Police are canvassing the area for footage of the shooting.

In the Thursday shooting, the man who died suffered gunshot wounds to his chest and shoulder, according to police.

A 34-year-old man was also shot in the same incident. He was taken by EMS to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition, police said.

No arrests have been made in either shooting.
