Ruff year: Four-legged NYPD crime fighters grace annual calendar

Meet the fuzz!

The NYPD’s four-legged crimefighters steal the show in the 2024 Canine & Friends Calendar, an arresting showcase for bomb- and drug sniffing pooches and heroic horses — and the cops they work with every day.

A quintet of Emergency Service Unit detectives and their canine partners grace the cover of this year’s Police Foundation calendar, showcasing their animal magnetism in front of an NYPD rescue helicopter.

Detective Katrina Navarez is shown with her dog Freddy, who is named after her father, Lt. Federico Navarez, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in Brooklyn in 1996 while attempting to help a woman who was being stalked.

“She said she actually joined the department because of how amazing the NYPD was to her and her mother in their time of need and in their darkest days,” said the Police Foundation’s Taylor Kahn, director of development and events.

Detective Stephani Sanchez and her canine Drew — a shepherd who stands on his hind legs and is almost as tall as her — are featured in April.

They combat narcotics with the Criminal Enterprise Task Force.

Employee Assistance Unit emotional support canines, Labrador retrievers Piper, Jenny and Glory — last year’s calendar cover models — get a furry February all to themselves in the calendar.

The dogs are the force’s fur babies.

“These dogs do amazing things now,” said foundation executive director Gregg Roberts. “They’re on the front lines everyday, sniffing out explosives, protecting our transit system, fighting terrorism and offering emotional support to the officers, and more. It’s really amazing and everybody loves them.”

May features Mounted Unit Police Officers Jonathan Azzaro and Kyle McLaughlin with horse Kelly — a real lifesaver.

They were assigned to a parade when they were alerted of a person who was having a medical emergency.

“They hopped off their horses and performed CPR until EMS could get there,” Kahn said. “The victim made a full recovery.”

All of the proceeds go to foundation programs, including the International Liaison Program, which posts officers in agencies around the world, and Crime Stoppers.
