Pete Alonso leaves Mets game with hand injury after getting hit by pitch

Pete Alonso became the latest Met to go down with an injury, removed from Wednesday’s 10-3 loss to the Dodgers in the bottom of the first after being hit in the right hand as he tried to check his swing on a 93 mph fastball from James Paxton.

Alonso went to first base, but after being checked by the training staff, was removed for pinch-runner Brett Baty.

Carlos Mendoza said X-rays on Alonso’s hand came back “normal,” but added he would undergo a CT scan on Thursday.

The first baseman has played in every game this season, starting all but one.

Mark Vientos, battling for time with Baty at third base, got the start at third against Paxton and moved to first to take over for Alonso.

Mendoza said he was “comfortable” with Vientos at the spot if they are without Alonso for a few days.

Alonso’s departure also opened the door for Baty to enter the game at third base.

Baty went 1-for-4, while Vientos was hitless in five at-bats.

Prior to the game, Mendoza acknowledged “playing time is important” for the two young infielders, adding he hoped to get them game reps and the situation remains “fluid.”

Despite Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor playing the entirety of Tuesday’s doubleheader, both were back in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Part of that is because the Mets still haven’t added a backup middle infielder since Joey Wendle was released.

Mendoza said they would monitor both McNeil and Lindor to see if they need a day off, but Brandon Nimmo was kept out of the lineup on Wednesday.

Lindor started in spite of having injured his left index finger on a bunt attempt in the first game Tuesday and extended his hitting streak to eight games with a third-inning infield single.

Nimmo pinch hit for Starling Marte in the seventh.

Nimmo and McNeil, in particular, have slumped of late, with Nimmo compiling an OPS of just .538 over his previous 13 games, while McNeil is in the midst of a 30-game stretch in which he has just six extra-base hits and an OPS of .558 over 120 plate appearances since April 26.

Veteran infielder Jose Iglesias remains at Triple-A Syracuse, with a .785 OPS in 40 games split between second base and shortstop.

The 34-year-old Iglesias hasn’t played in the majors since appearing in 118 games with the Rockies in 2022.

He is not on the 40-man roster, so the Mets would have to make a move to get him on there.

Kodai Senga played catch again Wednesday following the cortisone shot to treat nerve inflammation, Mendoza said the right-hander was expected to continue in that phase of his rehab.

“Nothing new to report,’’ Mendoza said.

David Peterson gave up three runs, two earned, in his first start since offseason hip surgery.

Josh Walker was optioned to Syracuse to make room for Peterson, but Walker was recalled when Edwin Diaz was placed on the IL.

Right-hander Dedniel Nunez was returned to Syracuse after serving as the team’s 27th man for Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Tomas Nido snapped an 0-for-11 streak with a homer in the fifth.
