TikToker rants that Walmart is even locking up $1.50 nail files to deter shoplifters

A TikToker hit a nerve with other users after posting a hilarious rant about trying to buy a $1.50 nail file from a Walmart, where it was locked behind glass to deter shoplifters.

“This is the future of Walmart,” lamented the TikToker Victoria Damore as she filmed down the cosmetics aisle of her local store, where the shelves on three sides were secured with glass barriers.

“I can’t even walk into Walmart and pick up a nail file worth a dollar-fifty cents because it’s locked up,” she said.

After flagging down an attendant to unlock the case, Damore said the employee had a surly attitude and treated her like she was “inconveniencing” him for shopping.

“Walmart, you can lock your s**t up, but it’s not the customer’s fault that you don’t stop people from stealing from you,” she said, adding that by the end of the interaction she didn’t even want the file anymore.

It’s not immediately clear where the video was filmed, but chain stores in New York and other major cities have taken to locking up even trivial items to guard against rampant shoplifting.

The video, which has racked up nearly 100,000 views, struck a chord with users, who complained about the same experience at Walmart and other retail stores.

“Half of the time you have to wait forever to find an employee to unlock the door. One time I waited 20 minutes for 1 item that took 2 seconds to get,” commented one viewer.

“When you ask for someone with the key they give you such an attitude and they said they’ll get there when they’re available. But they’re never available,” said another.

Several others wrote that they’ve stopped shopping in-store at all, and instead order ahead of time for pickup.

Stores like Walmart, Target, CVS and Walgreens have taken to locking up their inventory in recent years as incidents of shoplifting have spiked across the country in recent years.

In order to access basic items, customers typically need to press a button and wait for an employee to respond and assist them.

An investigation from Inside Edition back in the fall found that customers at stores in the NYC area were left waiting up to 15 minutes for an employee to help them — with one visit by reporters taking over 40 minutes to pick up just three items.
