Turkish migrants fall from 30-foot border wall and ‘break their legs’ in dramatic scene captured by The Post

Two Turkish migrants fell from the 30-foot high US border wall and broke their legs while illegally crossing into California from Mexico Saturday, in a dramatic scene captured by The Post.

The pair were with two others from their homeland and told The Post they had traveled from Turkey to Cancun, Mexico, then to Tijuana, aided by human smugglers who they had paid.

They made the last part of their journey into the US over the wall with the aid of a ladder provided by a people trafficking ‘coyote’ which got them to the top of the wall on the Mexican side.

From there two of the men fell as they tried to scale down the US side into San Diego’s International Park. One man said both of his legs were broken and another said one of his legs was broken — although that wasn’t an official medical diagnosis.

The Post confirmed US emergency service crews rescued the men. It was unclear what happened to them afterward, but they are presumed to have been handed over to border officials.

UC San Diego Health has treated a record of migrants who have fallen from the border wall in recent years, with cases jumping from roughly 60 in 2019 to 450 two years later.

The Mexican consulate reported 29 Mexican nationals died in 2023 from falling from the wall while trying to cross into the San Diego region, and a further 120 were hurt.

The median cost to taxpayers’ for each patient amounts to nearly $300,000, KBPS reported in 2023.

The Turkish mens’ ill-fated crossing attempt happened just days after the Biden administration put in place new border restrictions meant to deter illegal immigration, deport migrants faster and to stop abuse of the asylum system.

New asylum applications are suspended until there are an average of less than 1,500 illegal crossings per day for seven consecutive days.

However, a number of different exemptions quickly became apparent which re-classify border crossers and allow them into the country anyway.

One set of orders sent to Border Patrol agents in the San Diego area will likely help the Turkish migrants, as they have been told to process those arriving from roughly 100 countries in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia who cross illegally as usual, according to the memo obtained by The Post.

Those migrants will likely be released into the country with a future court date, but unable to apply for asylum, according to Fox News.

The number of people crossings continues to remain high with border agents recording roughly 10,000 encounters of illegal migrants at the southern border over the weekend, according to leaked data reviewed by The Post.

San Diego has become the busiest point for illegally crossing into the US for many and has seen people arriving from scores of countries from around the world.

It has become especially attractive to those from Turkey, China and other countries who use smugglers operating on social media to help them make the multi-country journey.
