Trump trailing Harris in three key battleground states: new poll

Former President Trump is trailing Vice President Harris in key swing states — in an early indication the 2024 race is tightening after President Biden’s exit from the Democratic ticket.

In the critical battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, Trump trailed Harris by four points, with Harris holding onto 50% support to Trump’s 46%, according to a New York Times/Sienna poll released Saturday.

The new poll is a significant reversal from President Biden’s numbers, which showed the incumbent trailing Trump in most key swing states during his final weeks in the campaign before he announced on July 21 that he would not seek reelection.

The survey, which spoke to more than 600 voters in each of the three key states, was conducted from Aug. 5 to 9.

However, other recent polls showed Trump faring far better in the critical swing states.

According to surveys conducted by the InsiderAdvantage between Aug. 6 and Aug. 8., Trump led Harris by one point in Arizona, three points in Nevada and two points in Pennsylvania.

In an Insider Advantage survey of 800 likely voters in Wisconsin, Trump leads in the Badger state, 49% to Harris’ 48%.

In Pennsylvania, the Trafalgar/Insider Advantage polling found Trump with a 46% to 44% lead over Harris, with 5% looking for another candidate, and 5% undecided. And in Arizona the former president had a similar edge, 48% to 47%, with 4% wanting another candidate and 1% undecided.

Trump is performing best relative to Harris in North Carolina, where polls show he is up 49% to 45%, with 4% backing another candidate and 1% undecided. Nevada also is not going Harris’ way: Trump leads 48% to 45% in the Silver State, the polls from Trafalgar and Insider Advantage show.

However, the Times/Sienna poll found significant improvement among Democrats about their feelings toward their nominee.

In May, 60% of Dems said they were satisfied with their choice of candidates in the 2024 race — a number that jumped to 87% in the August survey.

Harris outperformed Biden across a host of metrics on the swing states, the poll found. She did better with young voters and black voters, whose support for Biden had been waning in recent months, and more voters trusted Harris to handle the economy than Biden.

While 40% of voters had a “very unfavorable” views of Harris, the stat was still seven points better than Trump, who was viewed unfavorably by 47% of those polled.

But the poll wasn’t all bad news for Trump.

A full 42% of registered voters said they believed Harris was “too liberal or progressive” and voters trusted Trump over Harris to handle the nation’s biggest issues.

On the economy, Trump did far better, with 53% of voters saying they trusted the former president over Harris, to 44% of voters who favored the vice president. On immigration the Republican nominee held a five point advantage, with 51% of voters voicing their support to 46% for Harris.

“Broadly I think it’s virtually tied in these swing states right now. Everything is more or less within the margin of error,” Pollster Carly Cooperman told The Post, while noting the Harris momentum was real.

“People are really responding to her candidacy right now. The message of hope is refreshing but we have to see if it’s going to last. Nobody knows if this is going to burst or be sustained, but she clearly has some real momentum right now,” Cooperman said.
