James Bradberry could miss two months with injury after surviving Eagles’ cuts

The Eagles kept James Bradberry around rather than making him a roster casualty Tuesday.

And now they won’t have him for roughly two months.

Bradberry suffered a lower-leg injury involving a tendon during Wednesday’s practice that could sideline him for six to eight weeks, according to NFL Network.

The 31-year-old will not need surgery, per the report, but has landed on injured reserve. The six-to-eight-week timeline could have him sidelined until the second half of the season.

Bradberry had been floated as a possible cut for the Eagles before Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline due to his decline in performance, which led to him transitioning to safety.

He also played poorly in the team’s final preseason game, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Even with the factors working against him, the Eagles preferred having secondary depth, which can be an issue around the league as seen by the Giants’ backup cornerback problems.

The ex-Giant only carries a cap hit of $4.305 million for the season, making it more tenable to carry him.

NBC noted the Eagles attempted to trade Bradberry but to no avail.

“James always has had really good football instincts,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said Tuesday after cuts. “When you see him play safety every day here and see his ability to diagnose, his football instincts. I think, for all of us, that’s a transition, that’s a different position than playing outside corner. He’s got a skillset, it’s a long season, we already know he’s had tremendous success in this league playing outside corner, as well. With the goals we have for this football season, having a veteran player like that on the roster that we know we can rely on when called upon, we feel that’s important.”

He added, “He’s on the team because we think he can help the team.”

The Eagles will now be in a tough spot to find a quality replacement before they open the season on Sept. 6 against the Packers in Brazil.

Bradberry had been listed as a backup safety behind starters C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Reed Blankenship on the team’s depth chart.

“He’s a pro and he’s been a pro ever since he’s come into this building,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said Tuesday. “He’s led by example, he’s led by his play, guys look up to him.”
