Kings-Flames NHL game postponed due to Palisades fire

Wednesday night’s matchup between the Kings and Flames in Los Angeles has been postponed as a result of the fires that continue to ravage the Palisades, the NHL announced.

A makeup date has not yet been announced.

The Kings play at Crypto.com Arena, formerly the Staples Center, located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

Wildfires broke out nearby on Tuesday, and they’ve since swept across more than 2,900 acres (4.5 square miles).

Wind gusts over 100 mph have spread the flames, and authorities are now battling four distinct major fires. 

Approximately 30,000 Los Angeles residents have been ordered to evacuate their homes. And as of Wednesday afternoon, the inferno had claimed at least two lives.

Wildfires and smoke have caused a number of similar postponements in recent years.

In June 2023, a Yankees-White Sox game in The Bronx was postponed due to air quality concerns. At the time, wildfires in Canada had left New York in an orange-tinted dystopian haze.

A Liberty basketball game, scheduled to be played the same night indoors and a borough over at the Barclays Center, was also postponed as a result of the smoke.

Nearly three years prior, in September 2020, a two-game series between the San Francisco Giants and the Seattle Mariners was postponed due to poor air quality caused by fires on the West Coast.

Instead of playing the games in Seattle where they had originally been scheduled, both teams, the league office and Major League Baseball’s players’ union all agreed to relocate the series to San Francisco.

The NFL is also keeping tabs on the crisis and released a statement regarding the Rams-Vikings playoff game scheduled for Monday night in Los Angeles.

“The NFL continues to closely monitor developments in the area and will remain in contact with both clubs and the NFLPA,” the statement read, per ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry.
