Marlins’ Derek Hill makes Catch of the Year contender to exact some Mets revenge

Derek Hill made his bid for Catch of the Year with an otherworldly diving snag against the Mets on Tuesday afternoon.

The Marlins center fielder did his best Superman impression in the bottom of the sixth inning to rob Tyrone Taylor of a would-be extra-base hit.

Already with three runs coming home in the inning, Taylor smacked a ball 372 feet into the left-center field gap against the howling winds at Citi Field — of at least 19 mph — with the bases loaded.

Hill, playing a pretty shallow center and appearing to be shaded more toward right field, fought against the wind to track the ball down, leaving his feet, going full extension to grab the ball in the heel of his glove to rob the Mets of what likely would have been three runs.

It was already a good day for Hill, who hit his first homer of 2025 with a two-run shot to right-center, that, fittingly enough, eluded the leap of Taylor in center.

Hill’s catch gave him some revenge against the Mets, whom he aided last week when the two teams played at loanDepot park in Miami.

Last Monday, Mets catcher Luis Torrens ripped a ball to dead center field, and as Hill, 29, tracked it down in front of the wall, he jumped and got a piece of it with his glove — but knocked the ball over the wall for a two-run homer.

Tuesday’s catch to rob Taylor was more like the Hill of old, who made plenty of highlight-reel grabs during his days as a prospect in the minor leagues.
