Anjelica Huston, 73, reveals private cancer battle: ‘Big shock’

Anjelica Huston is a cancer survivor.

The Hollywood legend, 73, revealed her private cancer battle for the first time in an interview with People published Wednesday.

Huston said she had a “bout with cancer” in 2019 following the release of her film “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.”

“That was a very serious moment for me,” she told the outlet of her diagnosis. “I managed to survive it, and I’m proud of myself.”

“It’s not something that came lightly,” the actress added. “It came as a big shock, but it made me conscious of what I shouldn’t do, of places I shouldn’t go. One of those places was taking life too seriously. So now when the opportunity arises, I laugh, and I try not to make a big deal out of things.”

Huston said that she’s now “in the clear” of cancer. She didn’t disclose what form of the disease she had.

“I’m at the four-year mark, and that means so much to me,” said Huston, who confirmed she still does scans. “It’s a fantastic thing. I’m very proud of myself, and I’ve been very lucky. My doctors have been wonderful.”

The “Addams Family” star also explained why she kept her cancer battle a secret for six years.

“Sometimes you feel like you don’t want to talk about it for the obvious reasons, but there’s a lot to be said for talking about it and getting it out there and celebrating the fact that one’s come through,” she said. 

“Life is tenuous and wonderful. It also gives you the idea that the world is big and you can somehow match up to it. That you’re ready for whatever happens,” Huston added.

In the wake of beating cancer, Huston — whose next acting project is a three-part limited series based on Agatha Christie’s novel “Towards Zero” — shut down the possibility of retiring from Hollywood anytime soon.

“I can’t imagine such a thing,” she said to People. “I think it would be too much, even for me.”

Earlier this year, Huston was forced to evacuate her home during the reached out to her during the crisis.

“I was in a car with three dogs, two cats, and the housekeeper, and he called and asked if I was all right, and if I had someplace I was staying,” Huston told the outlet in February.

Huston dated Nicholson on-and-off from 1973 to 1990, during which they co-starred in the films “Prizzi’s Honor,” “The Last Tycoon” and “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” They broke up after Nicholson cheated on her.

“That’s the bottom line with he and I – when the chips are down, he’s there,” Huston noted.
