Meghan Markle still uses ‘HRH’ title in private — but denies breaking the rules

The Duchess of Sussex, 43, caused controversy this week when her friend showed off a gift basket she had received from Markle containing a printed note.

“With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex,” the “Suits” alum’s note to pal Jamie Kern Lima read, alongside jars of her strawberry preserve and ice cream.

Markle had sent the gift “about a year ago… to see if that helps lighten my load,” the co-founder of IT Cosmetics said on her podcast Monday.

But sources close to the duchess told The Post that she used the HRH title on a private note in a personal gift — not intended for a public purpose.

Insiders denied that the card was a breach of the Sussexes’ agreement with the late Queen Elizabeth II before her death, and claim that neither Harry nor Markle uses their HRH titles in commercial or public settings.

After announcing their departure from royal life five years ago, Buckingham Palace released a statement over the couple’s HRH titles.

“The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the royal family,” the palace said at the time.

While no laws were put in place to prevent the duo from referring to themselves as His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness, the pair did tell the late queen they would adhere to the agreement.

Still, the couple — who wed in 2018 — often request that their HRH titles be used when they travel abroad, The Telegraph reports.

Her Late Majesty strongly opposed the “half in and half out” approach to royal life that Harry and Markle put forward before fully stepping away.

“You work for the monarchy, the monarchy doesn’t work for you,” the late monarch famously told her grandson at the time.

The titles were immediately removed from the Royal family’s official website after the pair announced their exit.
