Jets dismantled by Bills in ugly loss as Justin Fields exits early in concussion concern

This was the antithesis of the team Aaron Glenn preached and promised he was going to deliver to Jets fans.

Disciplined.

Smart.

Tough.

The Jets exhibited none of those traits in a sloppy 30-10 loss to the Bills Sunday at MetLife Stadium, a loss that drops them to 0-2 in Glenn’s rookie season.

A week after showing much promise in a number of areas in a season-opening two-point loss to the Steelers, the Jets regressed, handing the Bills an easy division victory with an alarmingly poor display of discipline, smarts and toughness.

Days after the loss to the Steelers, which was heavily facilitated by a fumbled kickoff by Xavier Gipson, Glenn cut Gipson. The move was lauded by Jets fans as a message by Glenn that he wasn’t going to tolerate players who make plays that cause the team to lose games.

The problem with Sunday’s loss to the Bills: If Glenn cuts all the players who caused the Jets to lose this game, he wouldn’t be able to field a team for next Sunday’s game in Tampa.

“It’s not OK,’’ a seething Glenn said. “It’s not OK to lose like that.’’

Making matters worse in the loss (a familiar refrain in Jets history), they lost starting quarterback Justin Fields to a concussion in the fourth quarter after he was sacked by Joey Bosa.

Seven days removed from Fields’ marvelous debut for the Jets — he was 16-for-22 passing for 218 yards and one TD along with 48 rushing yards — he was just 3-for-11 for 27 yards with a lost fumble and two sacks for 19 lost yards.

Fields was replaced by backup Tyrod Taylor with 12:03 remaining, and Taylor led the Jets to their only TD — a garbage-time scoring pass to Jeremy Ruckert with 3:28 remaining.

The Bills took a 7-0 lead thanks to a mindless Micheal Clemons penalty (does that sound familiar?) for roughing Bills quarterback Josh Allen on a third-and-19 incomplete pass. Three plays later James Cook scored from a yard out.

Glenn should have cut Clemons, the perennially undisciplined defensive end, at halftime. Instead, Clemons was on the field for the next Bills possession. Not a great look.

The day of giving continued on the ensuing Jets possession, when Fields fumbled away the football on a scramble. Bosa made the strip and A.J. Epenesa recovered the ball on the Jets 24-yard line.

Six plays later, the Bills took a 10-0 lead on a 28-yard Matt Prater field goal.

The Bills made it 13-0 on their next possession on a 52-yard Prater field goal. That field goal was made possible by two poor defensive plays.

Cornerback Sauce Gardner gave up a 32-yard completion to Joshua Palmer and was called for holding on the play. Then, on a third-and-6 play from the Jets 41, safety Tony Adams was called for a holding penalty that negated an incomplete pass.

“Very disappointing,’’ Gardner said. “Stupid penalties, missed tackles. We weren’t good enough.’’

The Bills took a 20-0 lead on a 44-yard scoring run by Cook, who darted through several missed tackles, beginning with linebacker Quincy Williams at the point of attack.

Buffalo went up 23-3 with a 33-yard Prater field goal on its first possession of the second half. That field goal was made possible after Jets nickel cornerback Michael Carter II fell down to allow a 31-yard catch-and-run by former Jets receiver Elijah Moore (more on him in a moment) on third-and-10.

The Bills tacked on yet more points, taking a 30-3 lead, when Moore, who was drafted by the Jets and traded in 2023 after complaining about his role, scored on a 4-yard end around.

That provided insult to injury as Moore celebrated his TD by gleefully flinging the ball into the stands, which happened to be filled with a lot of Buffalo fans, the second consecutive home game that was noticeably heavily attended by opposing fans.

The Jets rushing defense was an embarrassment, allowing 224 rushing yards (132 by Cook), the most the franchise has allowed since 2021, when it gave up 260 to the Colts. The highest rushing output against the Jets defense last season was 187.

The Bills amassed 403 total offensive yards to 154 for the Jets. Buffalo had 25 first downs to 11 for the Jets, who were 0-for-11 on third-down conversions.

“Very disappointing,’’ Glenn said. “Like, very disappointing [in] all three phases. I’ve got to take a look at myself, I want to take a look at every player and I want to take a look at every coach. There’s no stone that won’t go unturned without figuring out the issue.

“I do know this … I’ve been here before with two teams, in New Orleans and Detroit. The one thing that we’re not going to do [is] we’re not going to waver one bit with the brand that we say that we’re going to play.’’
