Carson Soucy was placed on injured reserve Sunday ahead of the Rangers’ 1-0 loss to the Capitals at Madison Square Garden.

After the 31-year-old defenseman eventual 6-1 victory in Pittsburgh, which knocked him out for the remainder of that contest, the Rangers ruled Soucy out for at least a week.

Connor Mackey subsequently was recalled from AHL affiliate Hartford, but Matthew Robertson replaced Soucy in the lineup.

“I thought he was solid,” head coach Mike Sullivan said of Robertson. “I thought he kept his puck-possession game simple.”

Soucy crashed into the boards awkwardly while attempting a hit on Penguins forward Rickard Rakell in the second period. Looking shaken up after the fall, Soucy consulted with a Rangers trainer before skating off on his own power to the locker room.

The Rangers were unable to recall Scott Morrow, who was acquired this offseason as part of the trade return for K’Andre Miller, due to cap restraints. Since Mackey carries a cap hit of only the league minimum of $775,000, the Rangers could fit him under the cap as opposed to Morrow’s $917,000.

After the Blueshirts were eliminated from playoff contention last season, Robertson made his debut April 14 in Florida against the Panthers before appearing in the season finale April 17 as well.

The No. 49 pick in 2019 then made the roster out of training camp for the first time this season as the seventh defenseman.

Robertson logged most of his ice time next to Will Borgen in his season debut Sunday, while Braden Schneider largely remained on the third pairing next to Urho Vaakanainen.

The 24-year-old Robertson also posted one shot on goal and two hits in 18:08 of ice time.

“We just want him to keep it simple,” Sullivan said of what he hopes to see from Robertson. “Play to his strengths. He’s a mobile guy. He has a good stick. I think he has an element of physicality to him. We want him to defend hard. We want him to keep his gaps. And we want his puck possession to be simple and efficient. I think, just don’t try to do too much.”

Goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 20 of the 21 shots he saw in his 2025-26 season debut.

In the first year of his eight-year, $92 million deal, No. 1 Igor Shesterkin has gotten off to an impressive start. Over three games, the star Russian netminder has allowed just two goals, collected one shutout and posted a .976 save percentage to go along with a 0.67 goals-against average.

It is just the eighth time in franchise history a Rangers goalie has allowed two or fewer goals across the first three games. The last to do so was Antti Raanta in 2015-16.

The Rangers are off Monday before they return to game action Tuesday against the Oilers at MSG.
