Mitt Romney’s despondent brother strolls through rain days after estranged wife found dead

VALENCIA, Calif. — days after his estranged wife was found dead at a nearby parking garage.

George Scott Romney, 81, kept his head down and his face wrapped in a hood as the raindrops fell on his head Tuesday.

He was going for a walk in the Valencia neighborhood where he lives in a $700,000 condo, and where neighbors say his late wife — 64-year-old Carrie — was often seen.

“She was quiet. Very nice,” said a neighbor who asked not to be named.

Carrie was found dead at the base of a nearby parking garage in the Los Angeles suburb Friday night. It remains unclear whether her death was an accident or if she jumped.

The couple was going through a protracted divorce after splitting in May, with Romney filing for divorce in June and insisting a judge not award her any assets.

They apparently shared no property, despite being married for over eight years, court documents said.

Their divorce was still ongoing when Carrie died.

The couple was married in 2016 but are believed to have dated as far back as 2012, according to social media posts. It remains unclear when they met.

Romney is a corporate lawyer and the older brother of Mitt Romney, the prominent ex-US senator for Utah who challenged but failed to beat President Obama on the Republican ticket in the 2012 presidential election.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” the former senator told PEOPLE after news of the death broke. 

“We ask for privacy during this difficult time,” he added.

The couple did not have any children together, but Romney has a daughter — Ronna McDaniel – who once served as the Republican National Committee chair.

Carrie had children from a previous marriage.
