Woody Harrelson reveals why he’d ‘never’ return to ‘True Detective’: ‘Not a chance’

There’s no sleuthing needed on this one.

Woody Harrelson is setting the record straight on whether he would ever return to the “True Detective” franchise.

The actor, 64, starred in the first season of the HBO show in 2014 alongside Matthew McConaughey.

The drama’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, recently said he had an idea for another season starring Harrelson and McConaughey, 55.

On Friday’s episode of “Today,” host Dylan Dreyer told Harrelson: “A lot of folks want to know if there will ever be another ‘True Detective’ with you and Matthew McConaughey. [McConaughey] actually said he would be into it if ‘Woody and I think it’s good enough. It wouldn’t even be a choice.’ Would you do another one?”

“Matthew’s so funny,” the star replied. “But in fairness, never. Not a chance.”

Harrelson isn’t looking to reprise his role of Detective Marty Hart because “it turned out great” the first time. “I love that it turned out the way it did,” he gushed. “If anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.”

The first season took place in Louisiana, following the lives of Detective Marty Hart and Detective Rust Cohle (McConaughey).

The thriller took home five Emmys, with both actors earning nominations for their work.

In May, Pizzolatto, 50, opened up about having the actors return.

“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day,” the showrunner shared while on the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast at the time.

“It’s character-based again…. But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just [that] I had that in my head, and we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it. I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”

In September, McConaughey told Variety that his return is dependent on the script.

“We nailed that first season,” the “Interstellar” actor said. “But if it’s a script like that first one, with that fire and originality, I’d do it. And you talk about monologues. Well, Rust Cohle had a monologue. He talked about everything that was inside him, and he didn’t care if you were listening or not. There’s freedom in that.”

“True Detective” has had a variety of star-studded actors on the show over the years. Each season tells a new story with a fresh cast solving a grisly series of crimes.

Season 2 starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams. 

Mahershala Ali starred in Season 3, and Jodie Foster led Season 4. 

Ali, 51, and Foster, 62, also scored Emmy nominations.

Foster won both an Emmy and Golden Globe Award for her role. Season 4 was the most-watched installment of the show, with 12.7 million viewers.

Season 5 of “True Detective” is underway.

The next season — set in Jamaica Bay, New York City — is reportedly eyeing Nicolas Cage to star as the lead, per Variety.

No other details about its plot or potential stars have been shared. 

Meanwhile, Harrelson and McConaughey are set to work together once again in the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy “Brother From Another Mother.”

The pair is playing fictionalized versions of themselves living at McConaughey’s ranch in Texas.

The network called the show “a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.”
