The Issue: New Jersey and Virginia elect new Democratic governors by surprisingly solid margins.

After reading about Tuesday’s results, I decided that I must sit shiva for the Republican Party (“Prepare to pay for voting in extremists,” Ben Domenech, Nov. 5).

Have folks forgotten the metaphor of trees voting for the axe because the axe handle was made of wood? This election will be remembered as the day identity politics defeated self-interest and common sense. As former President Barack Obama stated, “Elections have consequences.”

The candidates in New York City, Virginia and New Jersey pretty much used Trump and affordability issues as a reason to vote for them. The sad thing is their policies will never make anything more affordable.

I moved out of the city a few years ago to Jersey, but Democrats’ policies continue to make it hard to live and retire here. It’s time for Republicans to not just wake up during presidential years, but all the time.

Democrats may have gotten drunk on their victories last week, but they’re going to have a hangover as they wake up in the months leading into the midterms.

The biggest problem for Democrats going forward is that they won their elections by making promises that are impossible to keep. They say life is unaffordable and promise they will make it affordable — which they can’t, because they have no control over the forces causing unaffordability. You still can’t turn lead into gold.

The election of Jay Jones as attorney general of Virginia is a new low for the Democratic Party. He is a sick and twisted individual who should never hold political office at any level. It’s a sad year for America that someone so despicable can win an election.

The Democrats as usual are hallucinating. New York managed to elect a communist and New Jersey is a blue state. What’s the big surprise there? There’s about a million more Democrats than Republicans in Jersey.

They’re out of touch with the damage their party did to our country.

The Issue: The Post Editorial Board’s takeaways from the GOP’s losses in the 2025 elections.

New York’s Republican Party long ago surrendered to a blue city and state by choosing its ineffective leader, Edward Cox (“Republicans’ Road Back,” Editorial, Nov. 6).

He has never demonstrated a penchant for promoting a lineup of electable GOP leaders among his flock. He is the supreme meme for occupying a leadership position by virtue of his family’s name, with as lackluster a performance as could ever be imagined. Talk about “low energy.”

I did not vote for Zohran Mamdani. However, The Post’s assessment of the Democrats’ bounce-back was only partly correct.

In addition to voters being put off by mass roundups of hard-working immigrants who are our neighbors, Americans don’t like the way President Trump and his administration never apologize for the way many of these folks are mistreated in the process.

Americans are also put off by the president threatening municipalities that have elected people with whom he has a personal vendetta. That’s the work of a bully and a cry baby.

While he attributes these losses to the fact that he was not on the ballot, he’s wrong. Instead of bullying his way through every aspect of his office, Trump ought to try acting like a statesman for a while.
