Wikimedia MKD GLAM program for 2025
By
Wikimedia MKD has, for several years now, been working on enhancing its GLAM activities by selecting a specific theme each year. This approach allows for a more in-depth exploration of the chosen subject and maximizes the potential for content creation and expansion across Wikipedia and its sister projects. By focusing efforts on a particular topic, Wikimedia MKD ensures a systematic and thorough coverage, making a significant impact on the availability and accessibility of knowledge related to the theme.
For 2025, the organization has chosen "Crafts and folk costumes" as its central theme for GLAM-related activities. This topic has been carefully selected due to its rich cultural and historical significance, as well as its potential to generate diverse and high-quality contributions. The focus will be on editing, promoting, and expanding knowledge on this subject through various projects and initiatives.
Recognizing the importance of expert support and institutional collaboration, Wikimedia MKD has sought to facilitate the efforts of its members and activists by establishing a partnership with a key institution in Macedonia that is deeply connected to the chosen theme. As a result, a collaboration has been formed with the National Museum of Macedonia, an institution that holds extensive expertise, collections, and research materials related to traditional crafts and folk attire. Both parties have expressed great enthusiasm for this partnership, seeing it as an opportunity to exchange ideas, provide mutual assistance, and ensure the successful realization of Wikimedia MKD’s GLAM programme objectives.
Since "Crafts and folk costumes" is a broad and multifaceted topic, it offers numerous possibilities for contributions across different subfields. It encompasses various aspects, including traditional craftsmanship techniques, regional variations of folk costumes, historical and social influences on their development, and even the preservation efforts undertaken by cultural institutions. Given this vast potential, Wikimedia MKD has found it justified to integrate most of its GLAM activities within this overarching theme, ensuring comprehensive and impactful coverage.
Among the first initiatives launched within this programme is the Wikipedian-in-Residence Programme, which is already actively operating. This initiative involves close collaboration with the Museum of Macedonia, where a dedicated Wikipedian works alongside museum professionals to document and digitize valuable cultural heritage materials. Over the course of several weeks, Wikimedia MKD anticipates achieving remarkable outcomes, potentially surpassing even the initial expectations. Through this structured and well-supported approach, Wikimedia MKD aspires to significantly enrich Wikipedia’s content on crafts and folk costumes while also strengthening its network of institutional partnerships for future GLAM activities.
